It's a wierd range thing. You can be up on them and to the right and it usually misses also. There's one where I went between a shatter also. Not sure if that's the one you're talking about or not but I'll add it to the OP instead of a comment. Edit - I miss read your comment but I'm still going with range and height. Not sure what the hitbox for nova bombs are but I've jumped others before also.
