THANK YOU Bungie for acknowledging our search.
Yesterday, those Guardians who had successfully foraged for crucial weapon fragments began the chase for the widely-anticipated Sleeper Simulant. The revelation of this new Quest was described as “awesome” by some. Others of you, who skipped meals and lost sleep on the hunt for the elusive Heavy Fusion Rifle, were not as pleased.
The response to Sleeper Simulant was humbling because we did not predict the community reaction. When we try new things, players often teach us a lesson about how to do it better, and this one has us thinking hard about how Quests communicate their availability. Our challenge is balancing between the secrecy that makes these hunts exciting, and transparency that could spoil the fun for the hunters. As long as the community is giving us feedback, we’ll keep seeking the ideal balance.
I still argue that 'time-gated content' is not the same thing as 'secrecy'.
-----
Please, we just want answers.
Here is the problem.
1. At TTK launch this gun was hyped as the 'Gjallarhorn 2.0'. It was a big deal. The first articles about this gun specifically said that there was a mystery quest to unlock it, and we would have to FIND IT by collecting relics and 'unlocking the gunsmiths memories'.
2. Bungie went along with this for 3+ weeks. They remained mostly silent, but they kept dropping hints like 'we can show you the door' and 'the truth is out there'. They led us on the whooole way. THEY MADE IT SEEM AS THOUGH IT WAS ALREADY AVAILABLE.
3. We over at /r/searchforthesleeper spent a LOT of time and effort during those 3 weeks trying to find this gun and unlock it for the rest of the community. We thought we were getting close when this happened...
4. Bungie releases the mission as time-gated material with NO mystery of how to unlock it. It simply shows up. That's it. The search is over. Our entire community was invalidated overnight. All of our time and effort was WASTED.
See why we are upset?
A whole community of gamers spent weeks searching for this thing. We thought we were doing the community a service by finding this gun that EVERYONE wanted. You tweeted about it, articles were published about it, the hype was real! "We can only show you the door...", "The truth is out there"? ALL of us had fully expected to be able to FIND this thing in-game, and then today you come out and release it as time-gated content? WHY would you do this? I can understand that you want to prolong the game and release content over time, that makes sense! But why would you purposely keep us looking for an item that WE CAN'T GET? Some of us put a lot of effort into finding this thing, only to find out that it was all wasted effort.
This has left some of us feeling really sour about the future of the game, especially if all of the upcoming content (and the remaining exotics) are going to be time-gated rather than actually hidden for us to find. There is no mystery in waking up to a free mission, there is no challenge in being given the answers. Why did you take this great potential and throw it all away?
Please, we just want an answer as to why it had to turn out like this.
Why didn't you just tell us we were wasting our time, like you did with the Basketball Court guys? Why?!
EDIT: Everyone keeps saying we chose to do this without them making us. THAT IS TRUE, but it was heavily implied THE ENTIRE TIME that this gun would be available through in-game events such as hidden secrets in daily heroics. Multiple tweets, articles, and even the Weekly Update pointed to this being the case. I wouldn't have had any problem with the way this turned out if they hadn't done that and led us on
EDIT2: Thanks to everyone for the bumps and trying to bring some attention to this issue. THE SLEEPER HAS BEEN "FOUND". Not really found, more given to us, but the search is at last over. We had a lot of fun looking for it, learning the lore, and now finally getting the gun. We're a bit disappointed that there really was no need for a search, and the lore surrounding this gun was not brought into the quest at all, and the quest was quite frankly garbage, but that's behind us now.
After all of this I doubt we'll get a response from Bungie, or if they do say something it will just be along the lines of "We don't want to spoil in game secrets", but I still believe that creating hype to find an item that literally cannot be found is a betrayal of the trust of the community, and I hope this doesn't go unanswered.

2 通の返信Maybe, and I know that's a crazy theory I bring up, but maybe the mission wasn't time locked. It was playable because we as a community found a certain amount of Dvalin Relics.

I think it was honestly a ploy to inflate playtime and they honestly didn't intend on releasing the weapon that early, but the dataminers pretty much put it on blast and said "we're missing one thing that we can't get" and Bungie basically said "well shit, that didn't take long. Go ahead and throw it out. We'll try again in a few months when the hype/anger/disappointment has died down.

its all about $$$$$$$$ and this kept people playing the game man its simple. its a business at the end of the day bro. it sux but its better not to get worked up so much about it bc they only care about getting paid....it sux but thats the way the world works

You're making a good point there!! That was a bit cheap and a waste of a good opportunity! The last weeks been fun though, every day something new pops up, that made this game so much more exiting. It's the right direction, but yeah with the sleeper they messed it up a bit...

RandomLetters27により編集済み: 10/9/2015 10:46:54 PMEver since Kings Watch turned out to be just a few rooms that you couldn't even Patrol, I stopped hoping for hidden content, or even substantial NEW content. Bungie has always provided exactly the quantity of things that their marketing materials have quoted, and not an ounce more.

6 通の返信To be fair, it was never bungie themselves who made the hype for the gun. It was game informer and then the fans that got everyone's imaginations going

It reminds me a little of how the Souls fans spend years looking for deeper meaning to the lore in those games, when it's simply been left open to interpretation. I pretty much expected the time-gated mission after the DVALIN relics stopped dropping. That and seeing other time gated events and Bungie's new obsession with quests tied to arms day. For all of the searching people have done, we always find one of two things. Unfinished/unused areas or dead ends. I really don't think that Bungie has inserted any secrets into the game that we can unlock as a community. Aside from the collectors edition emblem and the arr rrr rrr code, but those were minor cosmetic things that did not take anything away from us in-game if they had not been unraveled. Any future gear, weapons, new areas and missions will likely appear at future dates. Which is kind of a bummer, but no one forced anyone to put on those spinmetal hats. That said, thanks to the observant searchers that immediately decoded the transceiver.

1 返信While I understand the disappointment, you can't tell me you DIDNT enjoy the wonder and adventure of such a massive search across an entire community. It was awesome...

14 通の返信ancient lolrusにより編集済み: 10/8/2015 6:48:00 PMGamers like you thrive off of hype, hyperbole, and wild conspiracy theories. You all brought this on yourself because you give these developers WAAAY too much credit. You always take what they say to extremes, often going to ridiculous lengths for no good reason. Gamers like you constantly believe that developers are out to hurt them personally, or to waste their time personally. Bungie doesn't owe you an explanation for something that you took to an extreme. Bungie made some vague comments about the Sleeper Simulant and you took that to mean that you were Nicholas Cage and there was some goddamn National Treasure bullshit involved. I mean for -blam!-'s sake, man, you gotta go into this shit knowing that you might be going on a wild goose chase. You have to go in knowing that you have no concrete evidence for this, so it might end up nowhere. If all you have is speculation, rumor, incredibly vague hints, and a hunch, and then it doesn't turn out the way you hoped it would, you need to act like a -blam!-ing adult and accept the results of something that you knew might end up nowhere. I mean, Jesus, dude. You and I have both been on this site for a really long time. You more than me. You have got to know by this point that Bungie thrives off of being vague and on throwing around references and a lot of times they don't go anywhere. They've been doing this for years.

Maybe this is just me, but I think that it was awesome and fun to watch all the videos and read the posts with all the speculations and theories. That's what makes a game fun for me. The mystery and secrets that you can find and unlock.

3 通の返信Coyote_x_Starrkにより編集済み: 10/9/2015 10:07:28 AMThey never led anyone anywhere. You idiots saw Black Spindle and assumed that Sleeper Simulant was the same way. You thought it was some amazing puzzle or secret. You yourselves assumed this. You idiots built up the hype and overblew your own expectations. You built the weapon and the missions up to impossible proportions. You have no one to blame but yourselves.
