NOT because they don’t work on consoles…
NOT because nobody wants them on consoles…
It's because console gamers can't rationally comprehend MMO pricing. We've been trained to think that $59.99 is acceptable for a “game” but, more than $20 is too much for “digital add on” content. However, when the “digital add on” content contains more than the average downloadable content and it's offered for $39.99? Our brains misfire and can’t handle the fact that its called “DLC” or “Expansion” for $39.99. if Bungie had made destiny like Call of Duty or Halo and released Destiny 2 this September for $59.99, no one would be complaining, Why? because its all part the mold that were used to. Sure you can split hairs about recycling content but, consider this. Activision also publishes Call of Duty, a game which is released once a year for $59.99 alongside DLC priced anywhere from $.99 to $49. During the year lifespan of a Call of Duty game you pay the same if not more than you would if you just upgraded to The Taken King. Not to mention that many people have been arguing that CoD is stale and just recycling content each year.
Facts by the numbers.
Call of Duty advanced Warfare is:
$59.99 (MSRP) and the Season Pass is $49.99 (MSRP)
Compared to Destiny Which is:
$59.99 (MSRP) and the Season Pass is $34.99.
Compared to other similar games within the console gaming space, destiny is not an expensive game. Consider that Destiny is a persistent world like most MMO’s and yet, unlike most MMO’s it does not require a monthly subscription. Also consider that everything you do in Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is lost in Black Ops 3. Its a different developer and a different game, so you have to start over. Where as with Destiny, you are rewarded for your loyalty and you can bring your spoils to the next “game.”
So what gives, am I defending a cold blank corporation that doesn't care about me or my defense for them? No, I have my issues with destiny, many issues in fact. I post here all the time about them. Here are a few of my greatest hits:
“Wtf why can Pison’s Arc blast go across the whole map?”
“Why am I suddenly running out of weapon parts after 600 hours of gameplay?”
“Thorn should critically injure, not kill”
“Why can’t my shader change the color of my exotic? wtf?
I even have issues with The Taken King announcements. I’m not thrilled by the idea of the new patrol being on Phobos or Oryx’s ship. I was really hoping for a new area on Earth. I had hoped we would get a larger explorable area like Borderlands or Skyrim (obviously not as big, but you get the idea). You know, so that we can actually “explore…” Not just a loop with off shoot hallways…
I agree with the community that Luke definitely fudged the monkey in his interview but, he made that right and the pricing model isn’t as messed up as everyone thinks it is. The problem isn’t bungie, it’s the casual console fanbase that can’t comprehend anything other than …

*edit* amended comment about the taken king having the same amount of content as vanilla destiny.
*edit* added datto video because of relevance to the topic.
*edit* damn, 500 replies! Someone should give me a blacksmith shader for that lol ;)

You forget that the minimum 40 dollars for taken king is not a season pass. So what buy December they are gonna want more money for another 5 hours worth of dlc. Many people shelled out for the season pass without even knowing what the dlc's were. Then you get them and they are tiny, and there were only two. Most games give you at least 3 or 4 dlc's in a year. Not to mention most games you buy the dlc's or the expansions to expand the story or to keep playing the multiplayer. Well Destiny, what story? And multiplayer in destiny is just horrible, lag, cheating, unbalanced. And every fix they do seems to be to Nerf whatever weapon type is used the most. Oh people love auto rifles, Nerf. They hate pulse rifles, buff, wtf.

2 通の返信All good points except The Taken King does NOT have as much content as the base game whatsoever. The taken king comes with 3 new subclasses, compared to the game's original 6, 2 PvP modes, compared to however many we have now, some new bounties, maybe 12? new story missions compared to the 18+ if I had to guess for the base game, maybe 2 or 3 strikes, I'm not sure if they've announced the exact amount yet, compared to the 5 in the base game, and each have a raid. So overall, The Taken King probably only has around half the content that the base game had, meaning a reasonable price would be $30.

5 通の返信Zoeyにより編集済み: 6/25/2015 4:19:37 PMIt's not the original pricing of the content that bothers a lot of us, it's the fact that other countries are paying over 1.5x what the USA does even when we just want the digital download version? How is that fair? Edit: Sorry haven't been up too long, 1.5x +, not 2x +

I completely agree with what you said about the pricing. I think the pricing is fine. One of the underlying issues fans faced however is that (before the last announcement on the matter) new players were getting more of an experience than the loyal fan base. A lot of us have invested around $100 into the game. Then we were told if we want an equal experience to new players we would have to purchase content were already bought. Why didn't "VIP" playersGetty new emotes? Since the new players have never used the emotes before, the old emotes by default a are new to the new players. Players paying only the base game can already hit 32 quickly and therefore get into the nightfalls quickly which Erroll drop etheric light and Getty them to 34. The newer players don't have as close of a grind as early year one players and therefore don't need the clad item with XP bonus. Thus is why I feel that the class XP item should be in consideration as a VIP perk. Also Smith was an asshat. He apologized. Water under the bridge. With the new update, bungie showed, at lest me, that they hear us when we grumble and look into into. I feel that there's still Stine to be desired but it's a step in the right direction. For me, it want so much the price tag as it was the principal.

4 通の返信COD Season pass costs more and you get less content too... 4 maps a zombie map and a gun. Whoo.

Destiny was never advertised as a MMO and bungie themselves tried to distance themselves from being such. And it's not the price, in an MMO you pay for whole new area plus it's content to explore. All we've had from destiny is more of same recycled areas.

6 通の返信Seems you lost spacing there, bud. Sometimes it happens - next time, go back and edit? There's two interesting details in pricing. First - MMOs are generally trying to pay for their server farm costs. Destiny has obsessive (1000 hrs+) players who have paid for the original release, but not a penny more. Did they make so much money that the cost of the servers is penuts? Maybe. But the cost of supporting the player base is still non-zero. MMOs pay this from subscription (and make a profit the same way). That way, even if nobody ever buys another expansion, the game makes money. Destiny pays for it through DLC. If nobody ever buys another Destiny expansion, they will eventually have to shut the servers down. Second - the cost of creating a new game is vastly higher than the cost of creating new "levels" or "areas" within that game. Likewise, the cost of designing encounters in those areas is vastly less than the cost of creating the areas themselves. Even if The Taken King had 5 new areas, bigger than the current "Earth", "Moon", "Mars" and "Venus", and more story-missions, strikes, raids and PvP modes than the original destiny, it would be faster and cheaper than creating the original game. All this is basically irrelevant, though. What dictates pricing and content isn't what something cost. It's what people will pay. Bungie would be fools to charge anything other than the exact price that will get them the most sales. And to be clear - charge too much, and fewer people buy the game. Charge too little, and the increase in people buying the content does not make up for the loss of money from each sale. Likewise - the size of the content is not how much is "right", it is the smallest effort they can reasonably make without a significant player backlash. Make too little content, and players boycott, drag your name through the mud and never buy things from you again. Create too much content and your players will love you, but they won't pay your mortgage.

5 通の返信All irrational thought processes aside, I am super-stoked for the $80 Collector's Edition. I mean, how thoughtful of the game's creators to provide me with the means to jump from my outdated and dusty 360 onto the solid and sleek Xbone. I mean, sure, I've got the game and all the content on my 360, but that price of $80 with everything included and up-to-date... and the servers! Two thumbs up here.

3 通の返信SOB BADD0GGIEにより編集済み: 6/25/2015 3:51:48 PMI think I love you. Destiny isn't an MMO, but your point still stands strong. People buy a new CoD every year combined with a season pass containing approximately 12-16 new maps, totaling $110-$120. That's one year of game. Then factor in the stupid micro-transactions that give you gun skins at $5-$10 a pop. Consumers are willing to purchase this without complaint. Destiny costs $140 - $160 for two years worth of game (base plus DLC and expansion and a probable third DLC late Q2) and people are up in arms.

1 返信WoW add-ons cost the same price and yet last 2 years. Destiny add-ons last 2 hours You're all being screwed by the New Corporate greedy Bungie and enjoying it. How does that make you feel?
