NOT because they don’t work on consoles…
NOT because nobody wants them on consoles…
It's because console gamers can't rationally comprehend MMO pricing. We've been trained to think that $59.99 is acceptable for a “game” but, more than $20 is too much for “digital add on” content. However, when the “digital add on” content contains more than the average downloadable content and it's offered for $39.99? Our brains misfire and can’t handle the fact that its called “DLC” or “Expansion” for $39.99. if Bungie had made destiny like Call of Duty or Halo and released Destiny 2 this September for $59.99, no one would be complaining, Why? because its all part the mold that were used to. Sure you can split hairs about recycling content but, consider this. Activision also publishes Call of Duty, a game which is released once a year for $59.99 alongside DLC priced anywhere from $.99 to $49. During the year lifespan of a Call of Duty game you pay the same if not more than you would if you just upgraded to The Taken King. Not to mention that many people have been arguing that CoD is stale and just recycling content each year.
Facts by the numbers.
Call of Duty advanced Warfare is:
$59.99 (MSRP) and the Season Pass is $49.99 (MSRP)
Compared to Destiny Which is:
$59.99 (MSRP) and the Season Pass is $34.99.
Compared to other similar games within the console gaming space, destiny is not an expensive game. Consider that Destiny is a persistent world like most MMO’s and yet, unlike most MMO’s it does not require a monthly subscription. Also consider that everything you do in Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is lost in Black Ops 3. Its a different developer and a different game, so you have to start over. Where as with Destiny, you are rewarded for your loyalty and you can bring your spoils to the next “game.”
So what gives, am I defending a cold blank corporation that doesn't care about me or my defense for them? No, I have my issues with destiny, many issues in fact. I post here all the time about them. Here are a few of my greatest hits:
“Wtf why can Pison’s Arc blast go across the whole map?”
“Why am I suddenly running out of weapon parts after 600 hours of gameplay?”
“Thorn should critically injure, not kill”
“Why can’t my shader change the color of my exotic? wtf?
I even have issues with The Taken King announcements. I’m not thrilled by the idea of the new patrol being on Phobos or Oryx’s ship. I was really hoping for a new area on Earth. I had hoped we would get a larger explorable area like Borderlands or Skyrim (obviously not as big, but you get the idea). You know, so that we can actually “explore…” Not just a loop with off shoot hallways…
I agree with the community that Luke definitely fudged the monkey in his interview but, he made that right and the pricing model isn’t as messed up as everyone thinks it is. The problem isn’t bungie, it’s the casual console fanbase that can’t comprehend anything other than …

*edit* amended comment about the taken king having the same amount of content as vanilla destiny.
*edit* added datto video because of relevance to the topic.
*edit* damn, 500 replies! Someone should give me a blacksmith shader for that lol ;)

6 通の返信That was the dumbest post I've ever read. It's not the cost of the dlc, it's the fact that the first two DLC's had hardly any new content and don't inspire confidence in spending an additional 40 dollars...

10 通の返信No its not that at all. As a pc gamer at heart who also loves console gaming, the content we are offered on consoles is abysmal. Compare wow expansion to the whole of destiny combined, wow has so much more...

6 通の返信DO SOME RESEARCH. DESTINY NEVER HAS BEEN OR WILL BE AN MMO. BUNGIE SAID FROM DAY ONE, THAT DESTINY IS NOT AN MMO. IF MMO'S DONT WORK ON CONSOLES WHY IS FF:XIV A REALM REBORN DOING SO WELL?

It doesn't require a subscription. But if you look at the total cost throughout the life of 1 destiny game, divide that by the months, you'll get your subscription cost. Just executed in a different way than charging monthly. Dumbo.

2 通の返信Firstly, Destiny is not an MMO. Secondly, the Final Fantasy MMO's as well as ESO appear to be doing just fine on consoles. Desticle?

2 通の返信Your logic. "If they rip us off then it is ok for everyone else to rip us off". Corporate greed and you people are the cause of it.

3 通の返信Bungolickstaintsにより編集済み: 6/25/2015 9:13:24 PMOr maybe it's because MMOs are huge and expansive. Destiny is tiny compared to any MMO. It's not that MMOs won't work on console. It's that DESTINY IS NOT AN MMO. It's a space shooter rpg at best. I refuse to pay MMO pricing for a game that doesn't seem like a MMO. It's CoD in space. My issue with this thread is that I think it's wrong to say "MMOs won't work on console" based SOLEY on Destiny.

6 通の返信Crimson Lupiにより編集済み: 6/26/2015 8:38:38 AMI agree with the normal cost in dollars, having some experience with MMO pricing myself. But being a British player, we are charged in excess of $40 (£40, which equals $63). Now do you think $63 is acceptable for an expansion?

2 通の返信So sad that you felt you had to write this... People just don't get it. They aren't used to the MMO model, but I've gotten more than my monies worth out of this game.
