Humanity with our curious minds and wanderings a sought out explanations to the world around us like Rain,thunder,lighting the sun and so and to do so without what we would later have (technology) our ancestors imbued or attributed such things to powerful spirits or deities thus giving an answer why does it rain? 'Because the gods are unhappy' why do we get thunder/lighting? 'Thor is pissed/fighting Jotuns. Of course even this is a shallow explanation but one which I feel clarifies that it wasn't simply BOOM 'God has appeared' each country and civilisation created their own gods/spirits basically religion is an act of stream lining instead of there now being multiple gods responsible for things it has now become the standard for one God to have done it all.
