Bungie singlehandedly ruined the games industry.
It is a bit ironic to think, that Bungie first innovated 2 times with Halo, first stablishing the gold standard for FPS games on controller, every single FPS game today owes its controller layout to Halo CE. Then they created matchmaking on Halo 2, again a huge leap that pretty much all of gaming today owes to Halo 2.
Then they came up with "Live-service" with D1. This model has singlehandedly turned gaming from an art, fun, expression into metrics, engagement and profit. The industry wouldn't be in the terrible state it is today without Bungie.
We owe everything that is wrong with the gaming industry today, to Bungie.
Let that sink in.

You're giving Bungie a lot of credit regarding live services and/or rewriting history pretty liberally. That said, Bungie brought vertical aiming to the games industry with the original Marathon. One could say we couldn't even [i]look[/i] downhill without them, lol.

The live service model came from the MMO side, which had been around for a LONG time by that point. But they weren't the only ones. MOBAs were also doing it, particularly [i]League of Legends[/i] and [i]DotA2[/i]. And lets not forget fighting games like [i]Tekken[/i], [i]Soul Calibur[/i] or especially [i]DoA[/i] that were built around milking regularly released new content. Heck, while we're at it [i]The Sims[/i] and [i]Civ[/i] were already on the bandwagon, as were many RTSs.

I remember the 80s/90s arcade games that were designed around short bursts of fun to keep you feeding coins into the machines. The ones that weren’t popular got swapped out because they didn’t make enough money. Metrics, engagement and profit were important long before Destiny.

22 通の返信If you don’t like live service games, don’t play them. Not counting FFXIV (which doesn’t really count seeing as how I’m still in its absurdly large free trial) I haven’t played any live service games since dropping the first Destiny with TTK, and I’ve been having a lovely time gaming. The industry isn’t ruined, you’re just looking at a part of it that sucks.

1 返信Did Bungie really "invent" the live service model though? World of Warcraft was performing live service on an MMO long before Bungie.

MMOs have been around for literally decades with the Live Service format. A lot of them started as subscription-only too so that’s even more money they were able to hoover up. They were predominantly PC only though so possibly Bungie were the ones to make them as popular as they currently are on consoles.
