Destiny vs WoW costs, and content output

So in light of the eververse scandal, I think it is time we discuss the costs of running an MMO For World of Warcraft, an expansion costs around $40-$60. However, it is a P2P game, meaning it has a required subscription beyond level 20. Subscription costs vary from $13-$15 a month depending on which plan you stick with. $15 for one month, and on average being less for when you pay for half or full year subscription. Meaning that in total if I was playing year-round, it would cost around $156-$180 a year, and that is just for the subscription. Expansions tend to last for about two years with content updates following release. So if I wanted to experience the entirety of an expansion in World of Warcraft, and I was playing every month, I would be paying around a total of $350 - $372. And it really shows that they are making this much money, because not only are the expansions large, but so are the content updates in the following years. Bringing in new areas and endgame activities to the game. A World of Warcraft expansion contains multiple dungeons and raids. This can also be seen with the Final Fantasy MMO, which also has a required subscription. Meanwhile, in Destiny, an expansion lifecycle typically lasted one year, and overall cost about $100. This included the expansion, the seasons, and the dungeons. It could definitely be argued that there is a problem of greed at bungee. But in contrast to other MMO‘s, I think it can also be simultaneously argued that they just don’t make enough money in comparison to the subscription based MMO‘s who have shown to provide better support and more content output. Now I am not saying that destiny should require a subscription. Alternatively, I think they should look at elder scrolls online, which has a optional subscription plan. In ESO, the optional subscription provides currency for the cash shop, as well as several other benefits to the player account. I want destiny to be successful, and part of that is needing the financial resources in order to pay for development. I think there is a more straightforward and fair method of monetization then what we see currently. One that would also maintain the aesthetic integrity of the franchise. ================================================== But that is just something I was musing on today. What do you think would be a more fair method of monetization that would benefit the developers to be able to effectively add more content and support the game better? If destiny were to have an optional subscription, what do you think would be fair benefits for it?
