If you use something like Strand, then Anti-Barrier isn't needed as they can't activate their safety bubble while floating. And it intrinsically also counters Unstoppable.

I just listed that as an example, since the whole "mandatory to have weapon/mod" -system would be redundant, as Bungie just made whole bunch of subclass verbs to counter different Champions.
Radiant, Volatile, and Unraveling Rounds being procs counter Barrier Champions. Blind, Ignite, Shatter, and Suspend counters Unstoppable Champions. Jolt, Slow, and Supress counters Overload Champions.
It'd be quite lenghty and unnecessary check to go through every little nook and cranny within players builds to see if they have something to counter Champions. Like let's say I'd have weapon that generates Scorch - with enough stacks of it, it'll cause Ignite and stagger Unstoppable. It'd just have too many edgecases to process through. And overall I imagine you're talking about matchmade activity levels here, where Champions are at their weakest.

I know the pain you're talking about - before they made subclass verbs to counter Champion enemies, I was typically only one running two seasonal weapons, just to counter them. But I'm just saying that now we have the freedom to counter champions without firing single shot and we're free to use the weapons we like. Like the earlier example, if I go into activity where there are only Cabal champions, I can just activate Strand and deny both types and still use whatever weapons I fancy. In general we have more freedom in our ways to counter, and we aren't forced into just weapon types anymore. Sure using direct weapons, like Anti-Barrier Sidearm, are probably still the most reliable ways - just pewpew and shield shatters. But in current season, Volatile Flow for example, is very easy to activate and maintain, so any Void weapon can easily do the job.

Would be somewhat interesting scenario. Nobody in the Fireteam generating or utilizing any of the subclass verbs.
Solar players straight up ignoring Radiant, which is nearly free 25% damage buff. Stasis players not freezing or slowing enemies. Arc players straight up not using their grenades. Strand players not Suspending or Unraveling enemies. Void players not using Volatile and/or Supression.
But I guess there are those that just walk around.
