How do you combat this?

I'll be the first to admit that I suck at PvP, but it's hard to improve when you don't necessarily want to use what's best. Any tips? this scenario is something I go through on a regular basis. Also, I'm not bashing the weapon or playstyle of my opponent, I just want to improve. I know that HC's are the meta because of their high burst damage and peek shooting capabilities, but in this footage I'm the one trying to use cover and my opponent is clearly out in the open easily taking me out and everyone else. Note: I know that the weapon my opponent has is thorn, but as I already stated this is something I go through whether it be Thorn, Ace, Fate bringer, and all of the rest of the popular HC's.

  • Play a different shooter if that's what you're looking for. D2 is NOT a competitive shooter.

    • Honestly you just missed a few shots... auto rifles require full precision to out ttk a handcannon 3 tap. That players movement was really tricky though so it’ll happen sometimes. Smgs are much better at dueling handcannons at that range btw but if your going to use autos, I’d suggest using just one like that Monte Carlo and getting really good with it before switching to something else

What’s up buddy. I’m a 3.0 KD top 0.1% player and I’m gonna give you some tips. Your positioning in this clip is FLAWLESS and on the other hand your opponents is horrible. This was your gun fight to win but you lost, why? Three reasons; 1. Bad awareness. 2. You missed your shots. 3. You did not slide into the engagement. Let’s break it down. You get a radar ping AND you see him. You know he has a hand cannon and that he’s not playing cover. You’re using an auto rifle, so you can NOT peak shot him, he will always win. What you should have done is slide into the engagement, giving away your cover. Most people will see this as a bad play but they would be wrong. You standing near cover in this specific situation is doing nothing for you. You can’t peak shot, you have nowhere to run if you start to lose the engagement, and you’re using an auto rifle. You needed to take the all in and go for the kill or a trade. Sliding into the engagement while strafing gives you the highest chance of winning this gunfight. Even with poor accuracy, because auto rifles are extremely forgiving, you would win this if your opponent misses a single shot while you’re sliding or strafing. Also, I love your attitude in regards to improving. Keep up the good work! If you’re interested I go coaching on Fiverr under the name ItsNax.

            • I don't agree with the most comments. You did nothing wron here and you should have probably won this gunfight. It's obvious that "catch up mechanics" and "lag compensation" are working in your disadvantage in this gunfight. If it was the other way, you would have also lost. The enemy's movement is ridiculous, something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce6r759Qw8Q your bullets did damage like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvO7MVXnceM And you got killed like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl4JsCXH9b8

              • I think you're being patronized. What platform were you playing on? Even if that was PC movement, and PCs no recoil..... That was not legit. That was not a "fair fight". That was a loss due to technology, not you... Regardless of "your mistakes" in this engagement you can't learn anything from this, other than the game is a joke and those who say otherwise are the clowns telling the joke.

                • He probably had lucky pants, plus you missed quite a few shots. Auto rifles will NEVER compete with hand cannons at that range, especially if you are not getting first, accurate shots.

                    • The biggest problem is that you just kind of stood there instead of sliding, so there was nothing to throw off his shots. The thing is, even if you slid it would be hard to acquire the target because auto rifles arent great for slide challenging and you likely would have died either way. It comes down to the fact that you are using an auto rifle and were in a duel against a good player with a hand cannon, it was never going to be won. Im in the top 0.1% and I would have lost that fight if I had that gun and thats who I was challenging. The best tip I can give you is sadly to just use a hand cannon.

                    • I can't say too much--Wilbow86 gave an *excellent* response in terms of advice and per your video analysis to help you better deal with the scenario for the next time. I just wanted to say that it's good that you're acknowledging and accepting that Hand Cannons excel in many areas of pvp and not letting it put you off from playing the game how you want to, rather than giving up and try a different loadout you'd rather not run. We all play to win, but not all of us play to win AND to have fun at the same time. You're already doing loads of good for yourself, in terms of getting better. You're looking back at what you did, and you're seeing what you can do to do better. This will stick, and eventually, the next time you're dealing with a hand cannon or whatever weapon/tactic you've died to, you'll be pulling all the right plays to come out on top practically by instinct and muscle memory alone. Again, Wilbow86 made an excellent response for you already, but also note that since you were dealing with a Thorn--that one in particular will really, really punish you for missing. Because while any other hand cannon's ttk will drop quite a bit with a miss, the Thorn will have a DoT on you for some extra forgiveness on their end. That's also not even considering Soul Devourer procc'ing. So, the next time you're in this situation, not only you'll want to engage differently, slide, rely on flinching your opponent, etcetera, someone with specifically the Thorn not only has peak shooting to rely on, but the DoT can allow them to make distance, close distance, break LoS, and re-engage without losing too much kill time due to that DoT. They'll be able to track the damage ticks on you if you try to disengage or approach in a different way. Even if you try and run off and you hit their max range, they can easily tickle you with a Thorn shot and that's enough to stop your recovery and leave you one-shot for them to catch and clean you up or to make it easier for their teammate to just body you. The good news is that Thorn has less range than average compared to the other HC's, so creating enough distance to rob it of headshots is key, and its visual recoil (not sure about pc) is enough for a good number of console players to easily whiff shots once the aim assist stickiness disengages. Anyway, you've got loads of great responses here and best of luck to your future pvp encounters, mate.

A few points that I've picked up on, and a lot of it just traces back to Hand Cannons being superior. - in the specific case of Auto Rifle vs Hand Cannon, using cover like that actually works in your opponent's favour, because they don't need to continuously be shooting to kill as quickly as possible nut you do - their first shot was a body shot, you'd have likely won if they were using any other 140 Hand Cannon other than Thorn, damage buffs excepted, because they'd have needed one extra shot - not something that applies to every engagement but a definite factor in this one - they were jittering and threw a crouch into their movement; much like using cover, this has basically no effect on a Hand Cannon's optimal TTK, but it will ruin an Auto Rifle because you need to make every shot count and it's very easy for them to make you miss a shot or two with each move. Auto Rifles have the very unfortunate problem of having no real advantages over Hand Cannons in Crucible, Scouts and Pulses can stay well away from HCs, Sidearms and SMGs can be super aggressive and beat them in CQC, Bows are perfect for team-shotting and will usually make a HC user back off immediately, whereas Auto Rifles can't do anything to counter them. I think SUROS Regime with Spinning Up can do some real work if you want can learn to use it almost like a Fusion Rifle, and Dual-Speed Receiver lets you stay mostly beyond a Hand Cannon's range, but it doesn't solve the imbalance between the two weapon types. Also, don't sleep on Sweet Business - it's pretty much a meme, but people have long since forgotten that it has one of the best TTKs of all weapons, period - we're talking faster than a 140 Hand Cannon even while hitting a 0% precision rate. It is also deceptively accurate and can compete at surprisingly long ranges. So what if they know you're coming?

                          • You typically shouldn’t challenge someone when they have ground level over you. It makes it easier on them in that situation. 2nd once you went into cover you should go around and recover and let him come to you. Patience is a virtue you don’t always have to be the aggressor on offense to win but defending yourself aggressively also helps you win as well. Knowledge is power learn your gun battle mistakes and learn the maps and you’ll improve dramatically.

                          • I'm only very slightly above average, but let me give you my 2 cents about this. I will exclude the obligatory "hit more shots" because that would only have gotten you a trade in this situation whereas we want to WIN THESE. Going into that fight, you knew that your enemy had thorn and you had a 600 auto. Both your optimal ttks are roughly the same, but when cover is involved, yours drastically goes up while his doesn't, no matter who is doing the peaking. Therefore, the first piece of advice is not to stagger your ttk because that will benefit him instead. With that in mind, you didn't exactly go back into cover fully either as you never broke LOS after engaging him. Be mindful when hiding behind cover in destiny that you need to get pretty far behind cover because of bullet magnetism., especially against hand cannons because they have more of it. As for where your actual decision-making and/or mechanics lost you that fight, it was the decision to take then to stay. Neither was a good decision resulting in the loss in the clip, but even a 100% headshot accuracy would have gotten only a trade there. You should have avoided taking the fight against thorn in its optimal range even if your gun is better because you should always try to manipulate your engagements such that you have an advantage when you take them. Stopping your advance as far back as that pillar you passed on your right would have increased your opponent's target acquisition time enough for you to beat him out even if you did not hit optimal shots. But you did not stop at the pillar, and you took the fight. You still have a reset option from here, but you need to act as soon as your opponent missed his first shot. Had you already done some damage to him you could have killed him, but you were not on optimal ttk either, so you should COMPLETELY DISENGAGE. He either would have body-shotted you for about 1/3 or your health (looks like sd was procced) or missed entirely. If you turn around when you jump onto the disk you have height advantage on him and can win the duel. His best option becomes to leave you and go elsewhere. Looking at this clip, some general gameplay tips I would give you are to: -fully understand the situations in which your weapons have an advantage over your enemy's weapons and position to make those situations happen, -do not be afraid to leave an unwinnable fight, but do not think you can leave after the point of no return (usually will be about 1/3 into your health bar) -use abilities. I did not go deeply into this one, but a well-placed nade just before engaging would have made that fight at the very least un lose able. Hopefully at least some of this helped and gl on gitting good :)
