There are a few ground rules we need you to sign off on if you want to be part of our clan. But this is a video game clan, not an office, so I’m going to keep it short and sweet. If you need it spelled out how exactly to be a functional human adult this probably isn’t the place for you. Read this post and reply to it with the Secret Word hidden inside. RULE NUMBER ONE: DON’T BE A DICK This is a video game. We are all here in our free time, presumably to have fun. If you’re just gonna drag everybody down, we don’t want you. This clan was founded by people who’ve known each other for a while and we play a little rough, but there’s a difference between the way you mock your friends for a bad Crucible match and continually and intentionally disrespecting another person. You already know the kind of words you’re not supposed to say, and if you don’t you’re probably not going to last very long. But I’m not naïve enough to think I’m going to undo decades of social programming with a forum post, either. If you get frustrated in a Trials match and a “fag” slips out, or you’re quoting a hip-hop song and forget to sub in a “ninja,” it’s not the end of the world. Do it twice and you’re getting the side-eye, keep it up and we’ll have to have a chat. Just remember the oldest rule of comedy: know your audience. If you’re playing with the hardcore crowd trying to clear HM in an hour, giving somebody shit for missing a jump is fine. If you sign on for someone’s first Oryx kill, you should expect to be there for a while. So if that person has having trouble, DON’T BE A DICK. Again, getting frustrated and asking someone to get it together isn’t going to get you banned. A pattern of being disrespectful to any individual or the clan at large might. This leads us directly to RULE NUMBER TWO: HAVE A THICK SKIN As I mentioned, the founding members of this clan have been together for a while and in fact left our last clan specifically due to leadership that couldn’t take a joke if you gift-wrapped it for them. We don’t wear kid gloves, and we don’t expect you to either. If you are having trouble with a mechanic and someone tries to explain how to do better, they are not insulting you. If you are playing poorly in a high-pressure situation like Trials and another player asks you to perform better or replaces you, they are not insulting you. Even if someone literally insults you, they may not actually be insulting you. Use your noodle. It’s usually not hard to tell the difference between a joke and an honest insult. If you’re not comfortable taking a little bit of shit and throwing a little bit back, ask one of the admins to put you in touch with our old clan. I promise, nobody gets made fun of there. If you honestly believe someone is disrespecting you, let one of the Admins know in as much detail as possible and we’ll look into it. This concludes the presentation about rules.
