Necrochasm catalyst bugged
I got lucky and got my necrochasm quest and catalyst fully cleared after killing Crota, but after getting the gun I was not able to apply the catalyst on the gun.

You have to do the secret encounters in Crota's End. There's two of them. You must have the gun equipped to start them.

I just assumed that it gave the essence to complete the catalyst, not that it would also directly give it to you

Chances are just wait they’ll address it.

3 RisposteCurrent theory is it wasn't implemented correctly or bungie still wanted players to do the catalyst puzzle since the game completes the catalyst but won't let you use it till you complete the puzzle.
