Champion mods aren't bad game design, they're bad visual and sound design.
Champion mods aren't bad game design, they're bad visual and sound design.
#Some Context
Ok before we begin I'm studying game production in college right now so if you like what you read hit me up. I'm Mida_Multi_Tool on reddit dm me there (I know reddit is a lame method of communication but I'm not doxxing myself)
I've seen a lot of posts talking about the changes to unstoppable hand cannon mod, how you have to hold ADS for 3 seconds without shooting before your unstoppable shot is ready, but I can see exactly why Bungie changed it
#Intro
Bungie wanted it to *feel* like you were charging up this shot by ADSing so that the unstoppable shot is satisfying. But there are no visual or sound effects to show that the unstoppable shot is charging up, making it feel clumsy and unsatisfying to use.
#Fusion Rifles
Fusion rifles feel so good to use in destiny 2. They're one of the most satisfying weapons in the game. And it's all because of the fancy visuals and audio whenever that burst is charging. Now imagine a fusion rifle that didn't have a visual or audio cue when you pressed the shoot button until the weapon fired. It's unresponsive, unintuitive and not satisfying. Now instead of nothing happening when you press fire add some energy particle effects that coalesce into the gun and those iconic *vwoooop* noises and you've got yourself a satisfying weapon.
The people at Bungie are *masters* at game feel and champion mods should right into that skill area for them, making it all the more perplexing how these mods have gone untouched for so long.
#Go Crazy With Effects
These mods are PVE only, so teams can go all out with weapon visual and audio effects to show off their power. I don't know what the abilities of the engineering wizards are at Bungie to allow for fancy effects to happen for *every* gun, but something has to change. Having those energy particles coalesce into the gun like a fusion rifle whenever an unstoppable shot is charging and a booming sound effect whenever the unstoppable shot goes off would be so cool. Or the firing noise of an auto rifle get higher pitched as an overload shot is charging up followed by an electric sounding *pew* whenever it goes off. It's going to make stunning champions so fun.
#I Like Champions
I really like the game design of the champion mods, the way each mod has a different identity and character to it is awesome. But it needs significant visual and audio polish for this design to shine. Despite what this community passionately believes, the game doesn't need to get rid of champions. Stunning and playing against champions CAN be fun. I get listening to the community and pulling back on champions amidst negative feedback, but in this case that negative feedback doesn't mean to give up on champions. Bungie should instead invest more into this system to make it more fun because it *is* well designed.
#Conclusion
I'm sure there's one, or maybe a few Bungie employees somewhere that have tested the feedback that stunning champions is inconsistent for HOURS and thought to themselves "hmm, stunning champions is actually extremely consistent."
That's because this is a 👏visual👏audio👏design👏problem. (I'm trying to talk with my hands over text)
not a game design problem.
#P.S.
might make a part 2 because I have sooooo many ideas for more visual audio effects for buffs, debuffs, weapon perks, etc.
