NAT Type 1 - cable modem 2nd IP - MAC address pass-through solution
Hey all, this took me a while to do but I finally fed up with port forwarding, and the following options for my cable modem/router were a wee bit hidden.
I'm in Canada, using Shaw as my ISP. They provided me with a new SURFboard® SBG6782 manufactured by Motorola. From what I can tell this model of dual modem/router is becoming very common so hopefully this method works with some degree of variance for whomever is reading it.
So, instead of port forwarding and DHCP reservations, which basically shit the bed every day, you need to phone your ISP and ask them to add a second dynamic IP address to your account. Then, add the MAC Address (I used the LAN Cable address, I doubt the WiFi will work if you aren't hard wired) of your PS4 as a Pass-through MAC Address. The will allow your PS4 (or whatever console you have) to directly receive an IP address and internet connection from your ISP and it will skip the routing that messes with your NAT Type.
I phoned and did this just now, and it immediately gave me a NAT Type of Type 1. My modem/router continues to serve all other devices connected over WiFi or LAN via the original IP address.
I hope this helps other people.
