Since I started playing Destiny it's always puzzled me why they don't show true DPS numbers for weapons. As a Diablo 3 lover, it's a basic piece of info I've come to expect.
Attack power by itself is clearly not an accurate gauge of which weapon will deal more actual damage out in the world. Impact and rate of fire figure in there in a blurry but critical way. Yet when showing weapon stats they put a giant attack number as if it's all that matters and only show impact, ROF etc as rudimentary bar graphs.
A guy on reddit took it upon himself to painstakingly test weapons in a "scientific" way and plot the data he found as a chart (attached above). He also found some insightful side data while he was at it. For example:
• Sniper Headshots have a 5x Multiplier
• Auto/Scout Rifle Headshots have a 3x Multiplier
• Fusion Rifles have a 2x Headshot multiplier
• Fusion Rifles do not show their critical hits in yellow numbers (not fully tested)
• Maximum damage is 100%, minimum is 50%
• Snipers are the exception to this as they do not drop in damage even at the point of loss of visibility on the enemies (regardless of having a low range on the weapon making the stat useless currently)
• The Zoom perk found on some Auto rifles reduces RoF by 15% but increases damage by 30%
• The Reload on Empty Mag perk reduces reload time by 50%
• The game, expectedly, uses rounded numbers in final damage display but has precise numbers during calculations
• Fusion Rifles fire 7 shots
• Shotguns fire 12 pellets
• The game uses weapon tiers (very important)
