Queen of Nothing XVI The Loyal

Pg 153 “You shouldn’t be here, Deluna.” Shadow’s voice is fearful and tired. Eramis has kept them apart. Those who had joined together under Variks are now scattered across Riis Reborn. Weak anger stings in the pit of Shadow’s stomach. Deluna knows the risk she takes by being here, by seeking her former shipmate out. Her brother stands beside her, silently observing Shadow with weary eyes. “I know. But I had to see you for myself.” Deluna takes a tentative step closer. “I had to see how you were fairing.” Shadow briefly wonders if Alekris had sent the siblings to her. “As long as we’re separated and don’t seek to meet in secret, I’m sure I’ll be fine,” the hunter responds dryly. Clearly Deluna and her family have been fairing better than herself. Shadow’s worn down clothing and the ribs showing through her abdomen tell a different story. Deluna’s eyes are mournful. “I am sorry.” Shadow swallows the lump in her throat. “For what?” she says stiffly. She will hide her own struggles if it keeps her family from any further risk. “Shadow.” Deluna’s brother speaks up, approaches the hunter. “We are… sorry, for the treatment you and Variks have received.” He sounds awkward. Shadow rolls a shoulder dismissively. “They see us as traitors,” she says matter of factly. “Please, understand not all of us feel this way,” the eliksni reminds her, beseeching. “Deluna and I, and there are others. Alekris and her sons, of course. Irelekh, who is grateful for the time you spent to rehabilitate her. Ilassan, your friend, Variks’s friend.” Lowering his voice, he sends a nervous glance over a shoulder. “You still have our loyalty. Eramiskel keeps us apart because she knows, and fears you still do. She has enacted this with families all across the city.” The news sends bile rising into Shadow’s throat. She clenches her jaw. “I don’t think Eramis fears us.” The hunter’s tone is almost scornful. Deluna and her brother exchange a glance in silence. Slowly, Shadow shakes her head. “You should be telling this to Variks, not me.” As touched as she is by the declaration of loyalty, if anyone deserved to hear that they were still valued, cared for, and admired, it was Variks. “In fact, we did speak with Variks,” Deluna rasps. Before Shadow can voice her approval, the eliksni goes on. “And.. we expected to find you there as well…” Unwilling to acknowledge the thinly veiled question of why she hadn’t been there by Variks’s side, Shadow allows an uncomfortable silence to drag out. “Listen,” she says abruptly. Her knees tremble faintly as she stands. “I appreciate you stopping by. But you should go. I understand and I don’t blame you. If you are able to find contentment and peace here… I will not stand in your way.” And she won’t stand in Variks’s way either. If her torment is the price to pay for eliksni salvation, so be it. Is that not what guardians are for?
