The problem is that people don't see it for what it is. We don't have a seasonal model for content, we have a seasonal model for engagement. While I don't believe any one game can (or should) be a "forever game", this isn't done for the playerbase, it's done for revenue. Both direct monetization and feeding "the algorithm" are the intended goals. Destiny isn't a game Bungie wants you to play for 1,000 hours; it's a game they want you to play for 10 hours a week for 100 weeks. Like, has anyone ever wondered why they release content that's neither challenging to engage or complete, yet requires you to take to Google to discover? I'm just saying; it certainly is convenient that doing so causes #destiny to be a thing thousands of people type into search engines every day, isn't it?

  • This. The only thing separating the old content model ( dlc + expansions ) and Seasons is that Seasons are time gated. Seasons are time gated to spread out player engagement. Under the old content model, a lot of players complained that they waited 4+ months for new content that they finished in under 2 hours. Seasons were specifically designed to give the average player and excuse to log on each week. The problem with Seasons is that content still feels very, very thin. Most Seasons tend to overstay their welcome. Most players seem to checknout emotionally, or have become bored with the weekly ritual by the time the Season has come to an end.

  • I get what you’re saying and I’m sure all Destiny die hards have been victims of the algorithm at some point. However, I’ve had many hours of fun from Destiny, over many years. I’m happy to feed the algorithm (to a point) if it’s something I want to play. I guess people who like the seasonal model would say the same about seasonal content?

I'm not arguing for or against feeding the algorithm, I'm saying the seasonal model exists specifically to feed the algorithm forever. Bungie is very, very smart at this. So smart that they were purchased by Sony not for their ability at game development, but for their skill with their service game model. While I personally have the opinion that a single core entry and a handful of DLC expansions is the superior game model, I've made my peace that this will likely never be the case for Destiny ever again. Fortnite changed the landscape of gaming essentially forever, and that's just what it is until enough people decide they want something else with enough money instead.

Maybe my response wasn’t clear. I just meant that sometimes we are victims of this and sometimes we jump in willingly. There are elements of live service games I dislike and there are other elements I enjoy.
