I was very excited at the announcement of crafting entering the game. The idea of crafting my perfect weapons that I could use to the end of time really enthralled me. This is mainly because when I get a weapon I like, I want it to keep it with me to the end of time. I’m the kind of person who likes consistency. I want to have weapons that I know are going to be good all the way to the end. Also, when I pursue weapons, I want to be able to push those weapons to the max and have one weapon that I could adapt for any activity or situation I want. So I was very interested in the crafting system when I first learned about it; however, after it released, I was very disappointed. Sadly, this system hasn’t quite enabled or helped me reach my end desire. The inevitable goal of a crafting system is to get that absolute perfect weapon over time. That was what I was hoping crafting would be. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case with the issues I’m about to explain.
The first problem is that perks are not permanent unlocks when you put the resources into shaping said perks into your weapon. This is my first and most major gripe with the system, especially since it doesn’t solve the vault space issue as it would force me to still store multiple ideal rolls with different perks on the same gun.
The second major problem is… there are no craftable primaries or shotguns I really like or would suit my needs. Most of the craftable weapons are either rather mediocre even with their best rolls, or lack the specific qualities I’m looking for in a ideal gun. Meanwhile, it seems like many of the guns that aren’t craftable have much better stats and perfect rolls than even the best of craftable weapon rolls. The only exceptions to this are the Vow of the Disciple raid weapons (they are raid weapons, of course they are the exception). This gives me, in essence, no reason to use the crafting system rather than farm for the random drops. I already have a perfect roll funnelweb, giving me no reason to chase a crafted smg, especially since there are no good craftable void ones. I was hoping the duality dungeon smg would change that, but it isn’t craftable either. The Krait auto rifle isn’t craftable (I already have 2 perfect rolls on krait). In addition to that, several other weapons that I already have perfect or near perfect rolls on already aren’t craftable, giving me little reason to craft with the limited crafting options with mostly subpar weapons.
The third problem is element caps. I would love at this point to be able to save resources up for when those perfect weapons do come into the crafting system. I want to be ready to make all those wonderful weapons if they ever do come; however, the element caps prevent me from doing this, forcing me to store deep sight weapons in case I need them for the resources in the future. This further crimps on vault space especially with the previous aforementioned facts.
All in all, the crafting system is far off the mark from being a viable way to improve one’s kit in the midst of all these flaws. For me, there simply isn’t any reason to craft since the main weapons of interest for me aren’t craftable. Many other players are likely in the same boat as me and honestly will likely skip the crafting system since it doesn’t offer too much in the way of reliable weapons.
