Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein. This -blam!- was crazy when it came out. I go back to this album every few years, and it somehow seems to hit harder every time. The subject matter is fairly heavy, definitely a window into a dark future seemingly devoid of hope, but the music is filled with threads of beauty and moments of optimism despite the at times almost oppressively dark themes. The production on this one is on another level, with samples ranging everywhere from “Mexican Radio” to the OG Mewtwo sprite sounds. Favorite track at the moment is Pigeon. El-P flips “Portrait of Tracy” by Jack Pastorious in a way that’s delectable 👨‍🍳💋👌 Into Another - Ignaurus. A perfect record in almost every way. The musicianship is -blam!- tip top magoo, even the mistakes feel deliberate. The lyrics are well thought out, heady and heavy. It sonically lands somewhere in between “if Led Zeppelin wrote a Faith No More record” and “if Rush tried to write a Primus record.” Despite feeing a bit dated at moments, this is music that’s raw, honest, expressive and above all unique. Absolutely one of my favorite rock records of all time. If the opener “Running into Walls” doesn’t grab you, you’re a lost cause, and I kindly ask that you leave me and my fat cancerous nuts alone.

I'm not listening to rock unless it's + 30 years old and I absolutely hate metal BUT I find Agalloch to be fantastic. Songs such as [i]In the shadow of our pale companion[/i] and [i]Limbs[/i] are more metal'esque journeys in tempo and tones, rather than the traditional yelling in to a mic with a backdrop of guitars and drums. They are long tracks but tied together so well. For some more easy listening I'm a big fan of the retro synth genre. Bands like Gunship and The Midnight are great. And always headphones. Well, unless you have access to a really high-end system and no neighbors.
