Yeah I’ll have to agree with you on the finale to season 1. The only reason it isn’t technically deus ex machina is because part of it was introduced in the previous episode, but the heart of the TARDIS is still kind of a fix-all plot device that can get pulled out of a writer’s backside when they need something magic to happen. It doesn’t happen a lot, but the sonic screwdriver is frequently used like this with increasingly convenient functions explained away with gobbledygook. The treasure hunt thread through the series was good though. It only took the second instance of Bad Wolf for all the kids at school to cotton on and start searching every episode for where it would appear. There are a few more of them in the seasons to come.

  • Yeah, it kinda felt like they wrote themselves into a corner. They wanted to pose this question to the Doctor of "are you a killer or a coward" and have him answer "coward", but they also didn't want to let the Daleks win, so they had to throw in this third cop out option. It's kind of the same situation to Avatar: The Last Airbender, now that I think about it. They wanted to put forth a story where mercy is seen as a good thing, but then they also wrote themselves up a villain where showing mercy would actually just make everything worse, so they kinda just sidestep the problem with some new magic hullabaloo. Ah, man, did all the kids at school pick up that early? As a writer, you'd think I'd catch onto these kinds of things, but I legit never noticed until it was explicitly pointed out in show!
