Daybreak Wars Ch. 6 pt. 3: A Day Without Light

“Brace for impact!” Blake yelled to all of the passengers. He threw off his helmet and looked around; without his tinted visor, the lights on the carrier seemed blinding, but the shattered visor was far from transparent. The Guardian that was flying the hawk airbus was unconscious, and Kendrick and Lafayette were still recoiling from having their souls ripped from them. “Do I have any Light left?” Blake asked, despite feeling cold as a stone.     “Not enough to maintain a stable Ward of Dawn,” Doc replied.     “But I do have some?” Blake asked again. He anxiously watched as the snow covered soil of Earth grew ever nearer.     “Yes.”     “Then tell me the last possible second I can wait to deploy it!” Blake channeled the remaining Light into his hands and waited for Doc’s signal. Any of the civilians that weren't crying were comforting those that were. Mountain peaks looked like claws of death, ready to catch the ship, but Blake still waited. There was no horizon left to see, just the dead ground, but Blake still waited. All of the passengers had given up hope, but Blake still waited.     “Now!” Doc shouted.     Blake cracked open his eyes, but only partially; as his head drifted from side to side, he saw two blurry figures talking to each other, but he couldn't hear what they were saying. His head fell back as he lost consciousness once again.     Blake woke up again, and he saw several people around him this time. He could no longer see the sun above him, just a dull green covering. An awful ringing swelled in his ears, muffling what few voices he could detect. Someone approached him just as his eyes locked shut a third time.     Blake was startled awake again, but this time to the sound of screaming--and gunfire. The titan clambered to his feet, but his knees seemed to refuse the taxing demand. “Sir, sir!” a young woman declared. “You've done enough, let them handle this!” she had blocked the exit of the tent and firmly pushed the man back.     “What's going on out there?!” Blake asked.     “It's just a small skirmish, but it's under control,” the woman replied.     Another loud gunshot was followed by the yelp of some beast. Blake cocked his head toward the sound, then looked back to the woman. “Ma’am, I'm going out there.” The woman silently protested, but it was little to deter the titan. Blake picked up his Chaperone, then stepped outside; sunlight washed out the environment, and it took him some time to adjust.     “What the h*** are you doin’ out here?!” Kendrick shouted before he threw a warbeast onto the ground and snapped its neck.     Lafayette ran up to Blake, heavily panting. “You… are…  in no condition… to--Get down!” The warlock pulled Blake to the ground, himself going down too, just as a warbeast jumped over them. Blake tensed up and groaned from the pain, but Lafayette was quick to his feet and to gun down the creature with a submachine gun.     Blake watched as the three standing Guardians, and a handful of civilians, formed a perimeter and fended off the scouting party. Once the Cabal packleader was killed, the remaining warbeasts scattered, some even limping after taking bullets to the legs; the less fortunate fell like flies as marksmen pegged them in the heads or spines.     Several people, including the woman that was originally caring for Blake, brought a cot from the tent and he was hoisted onto it. “Mr. Thrower,” Lafayette said, “you did your job already; we’re all alive because of you. Let us take it from here. Is that so much to ask?”     Blake scorned the warlock, but he had nothing to say. As he was carried back to the tent, he saw the hawk--perfectly intact--cradled in a perfect, concave crater. The airbus and its passengers experienced an impossibly smooth landing, but Blake, the conduit for the Ward of Dawn, felt the entirety of the impact.     “Your medical equipment is so primitive!” a ghost shouted as he struggled to fly around. “And what's your credentials? Ph.D for applying band-aids?!”     “I-I-I… I don't understand…” the woman stuttered.     “Ignore him,” Blake stated. “He’ll probably be ranting for the next hour…”     “Look at this place! It's not sanitary at all! And did no one think to bring proper lab equipment?! There's only a handful of needles! I mean, how do you imbeciles plan to examine blood without contaminating the samples?!”     “I'm sorry, sir, but I don't like your ghost,” the woman whispered as she handed Blake a pain pill.     “Very few do,” the titan replied. “My name’s Blake… you can call me Blake.”     “You can call me Sandra,” the woman replied as her lips crescend.
