<I don't think eyes have anything to do with it. Descendants used to have red eyes in D1, but they looked yellow from a distance. In D2, they were perma-yellow. Normal Hydras never had blue eyes, it just looked that way until you got close to one. The only Hydra that I think ever had a blue eye was the Templar, and that was only ONE blue eye. The rest appear orange because of the blue face shield, but they are presumably red. Gate Lords also had red eyes, but with the yellow appearance from afar. I should know, I've taken way too many screenshots to not know. D1: Goblins (all programmings): Red eyes Hobgoblins (all programmings): Red eyes, orange eyes when shield is ready Minotaurs (all programmings): Red eyes Harpies (all programmings): Red eyes Hydras (ALL programmings): Red eyes, main eye appears blue from afar Descendants (all basic units): Red eyes, appear yellow from afar, hobgoblin shield applies. Precursors (all basic units): Blue eyes, hobgoblin shield applies, Minotaurs have red lights on chest Gate Lords: Red eyes, yellow from afar Overmind Minotaurs: White eyes, red lights on chest Templar: Blue and red eyes, face shield applies Gorgons: Blue eyes Atheon: Blue eyes (including chest) Sol Primeval: Eyes respective to their class (Gate Lord, D Minotaur, Overmind Minotaur) Theosyion: Radiolarian center with red eyes (appear orange due to lighting) Sekrion: Yellow lights and eyes Undying Mind: All red Cyclops: Purple eye Descendant Gatekeeper: Bright yellow eye Precursor Gatekeeper: Bright white eyes D2: All present basic Vex units: Red eyes, Hobgoblin shield aura applies All Descendant Units (even Hydras now): Yellow eyes, Hobgoblin shield aura applies All Descendant Units (yes... Hydras too, don't let the lens flare fool you): Blue eyes, Hobgoblin shield aura applies All Cyclops (overrules the previous 3 categories if you count them): Purple Brakion: Red eye Protheon: White eye and red lights dotted over the body, elemental change in effect Dendron: Purple Panoptes: Red Fanatics: No eyes, but their cores flash red, implying some kind of malfunction Argos: Many red eyes>

You know what's funny about their lights is that the majority of them are red and fox implies that these red-eyed units are associated with common tasks. And yet, we notice in the early 2013 moodboard concept art of the five alien races that the Vex race is represented in red colour and I noticed this pattern with the other alien races as the Fallen are mostly blue-eyed and the Hive are mostly green-eyed. In this theory, I may have been wrong regarding Race 5 not being related to the Darkness since the D2 opening cutscene suggest an ancient enemy represented by a large triangle overshadowing the Traveler. I haven't finished the main campaign yet so it remains to be seen if the Jovian race are related to Race 5 since they are apparently yellow-eyed. • <We haven't heard of the Jovians like at all in D2. All we see are the Triangle Ships. Finish the campaign and we'll see why the Jovian theory is probably incorrect. Also Cabal eyes are brown.>

  • I thought they looked grey but which Cabal have you found to have brown eyes so far.

  • <First off, Ghaul has red eyes. Next up, Calus has brown eyes. The Consul has lighter brown eyes. I have to check my sources on dead D2 Cabal but I'm pretty sure they also have brown eyes. D1 Cabal have... varying eyes. Sometimes they're white, other times they are black... or nonexistent... not sure.>

The Hive have alot of greeness not just in their eye colour but also in their overall architecture.

  • I hope we can ask Bungie regarding the Cabal eye colour since they are unclear to me.

  • This is basically all speculation, the moodboard could represent apart from their eye colours, the overall atmosphere or colour associated with a race.

  • <I'd say atmosphere. Vex incorporate red lights into their architecture at times. Most Cabal bases in D1 were grey. Hive have a lot of green around them, as well as yellow. Fallen uses a lot of arc energy, which is blue.>

  • It is true that a species will always have a variety of traits but I believed that these colours could represent the prominent eye colour found in each race. Even the lore describes the Hive as generally green-eyed and Eris has green eyes due to her associations with the Hive. I have to admit that this theory is biased since I haven't taken into account the populations of these races from outside the Solar System. See the D1 cabal have black/white eyes which still sortof matches the colour of their race card.

  • <But you have to understand that the Fallen will always have blue eyes unless there's something affecting them... like SIVA. Cabal have varying color eyes, like humans, Calus shows this. Regulating all of them to gray just because their models don't have room for much variation seems odd. Hell, the Hive have varying color eyes. Urrox has orange eyes, so do Swordbearers. Gatekeepers have blue eyes and Ogres have purple eyes (though I can excuse that one). Vex now only have red eyes in the present. Also I'm now certain the Darkness has a lot more green than yellow.>

  • See that's the point! You even mentioned that the Fallen will always have blue eyes unless they are influenced by the environment, in this case SIVA.

  • Wow, thanks for all this. I’m sorry to say I️ won’t change my stance because what you’ve found might be due to some overlap with the basic Vex model underneath the different subtype skins or even just Bungie underlying red beneath the others to add a cool color effect from certain angles, but I’ve put all this under consideration and will keep my eyes and ears open for more Did u notice that the D2 basic Precursor units have both red and blue in their eyes? Depending on how u move u can catch both colors and sometimes I️ sweat both fade away to leave a clear or white coloration. Don’t know if this is my eyes messing with me or if it’s intentional, but u may want to check it out

<It's possible the switch in models didn't go too well with Precursor Vex. I've noticed that they look up more often than before. I swear they're incapable of looking down now. Also, Precursor Minotaurs... NORMAL, Precursor Minotaurs, have the Minotaur hat on. I don't know if it's the same with Descendants, I'll check whenever I get to the Saint-14 quest.>
