My two shiny copper pennies: Once upon a time, there was a princess. Only she was a blood-sucking vampire thing, and Prince Charming is a mercenary, because in The Last Wish, everything is a kind of campy B horror movie reflection of itself. It's a series of short stories, each one a kind of fractured take on traditional fairy tales. At its best, when it isn't taking itself too seriously, it has a kind of mocking self-awareness that's tied to an almost sweet wistfulness, a regret for the mystery and wonder that's leaked out of life. At worst, when it tries to push the protagonist as the ultimate badass with anachronistic antitheism, it's a bit of a slog, but these parts are mercifully limited to the beginning and end of the book. I'm hesitant to comment on the quality of the writing, since it's a translation from Polish, but in general I found it more polished than Polish'd, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality. A pleasant diversion and doubtless an delight for fans of the game.
