I think the reason is to prevent people from stocking up tokens for when the item they want drops. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the engrams only give what's available that week, right? I don't really play trials so I wouldn't know without confirming it. Imagine if everyone just stocked up on tokens until Astral or Summoner were available (because they're basically the only ones worth grinding).
We don't need two of the best PVP weapons becoming more common than pre-nerf Luna/ NF, especially when these weapons don't require even 1/3 of the grind, but just need you to win 3 matches when they're available or go Flawless otherwise, something a lot of people make look easy considering the stats of most people in regular PVP. If the tokens didn't expire, I'd see no reason for Bungie to not reprise any of the pinnacle weapons in their former glory.

All loot earned through the token system in trials consists of only items you´ve unlocked. I own the helmet, grips, shotgun, rocket launcher, and scout rifle, so I will only get those items from the loot pool until I earn something new. However, the bounty named end game tells you to complete trials matches (9-10) to receive anything from the trials loot pool.

The engram opens loot what is in your loot pool only. If you only every wanted the shotgun , then only ever unlock the shotgun on that specific character

Actually I’m pretty sure if you save the engram bounty it drops what ever you get the current week you open the engram..

Saving the bounty works to hold tokens or engrams in other weeks. But once you use the bounty it will be gone after that weekend if you don't unlock gear with it.

The engram loot pool is locked to whatever pieces you earned in trials. Like for example if you only have gotten the shotgun the only thing you will get from the engram is the shotgun, so pretty much the more you discover your loot pool size in the engram increases which is really bad design

Thank you for clearing that up. The point does still stand though, unless there's a wwapon I'm forgetting, that's a 1/6 chance of getting the weapon you want if you've only unlocked weapons. In my case, this would be Astral, Exile, and I think that's all I've gotten from Trials. If you didn't care enough about the rest of the trials gear to grind it, it's really easy to grind what weapon you want if you have the patience to wait for that week.

Only guns were getting imo is astral and summoner. Armor doesn’t really matter to me. The only pieces of armor I like is the Titan/warlock helmet and hunter cloak. But I feel there should be two nodes for token usage.,One for armor and one for weapon
