How is it that killing one of the vilest characters in the game gets you recruited by the most evil faction?

The Dark Brotherhood looks for people who are cold, calculated, and bloodthirsty killers. I think you match the description well by killing the person
-
I walk into the orphanage, hear the sadistic headmistress threaten "extra beatings", and in a rage I bury my 8-pound battle axe in her face. Cold? No. Calculated? Rather the opposite. Bloodthirsty? Maybe, in a "white hot righteous anger" sort of way. Dark Brotherhood material? Strawberry Shortcake would be a better candidate.
-
They also look for passion in the killing. If you have one of those traits, they’ll consider it.

A good assassin is dispassionate about killing. And to be worthy of the Dark Brotherhood, you would have to be devoid of moral principles. Killing an obviously despicable person in a rage, a rage resulting from moral outrage at her habit of abusing helpless children... that's a far cry from the icy and amoral killers that the Brotherhood would want.
-
They still accept you regardless

I usually avoid the DB questline, just because I like the Brotherhood. They're interesting. I like the werewolf guy who calls me beef roast. I like the Argonian. I like the snarky elf, the mad mage, and even the Un-child. Even the jester has his moments. And if you follow the quest line either way...
They pretty much all die.
But despite that, I always give Grelod a free all expenses paid one-way trip to the plane of oblivion of her choice. It's the principle of the thing.

Lol I just realized that being an assassin is one of the few high-paying professions requiring you to not be passionate about your job.
-
Just amoral, skilled, and completely willing to kill whoever your agency targets.
