I mean, I don't have a ton of money invested in stocks, but I definitely noticed the difference. it's also dumb to brag about a net positive year. Has there ever been a year that wasn't a net positive in the last...50 years? Other than 2008/9?

Yeah it was, but that is relative to total value in the market, which is why nobody measures ups and downs in terms of points. When measured in terms of percent change in value, it was a 4.5% drop, barely a blip. At 10% you begin to get into correction territory, which should be concerning.
