The power to shape thought, and how other people see you. ..and a necessary-but-not sufficient step to commanding respect from others is to stop letting them disrespect you to your face. Which is why African-Americans don't tolerate being called "The N-word". The problem isn't the word. Its the disrespect for our humanity that is usually bundled up with the use of that word. The problem isn't "Indian". The problem is the obvious mocking, racial caricature that Chief Wahoo is. I'm not even Native American, and I find the damn thing offensive.

[i]"Why y'all coming down here makin' trouble? We never had a 'race problem' until those troublemakers started comin' down here......" [/i] Those who benefit or are not impacted by an injustice have the luxury of ignoring it, or denying the severity of the problem. Those who are impacted by it, do not. And trying to ignore that one IS impacted by it in an effort to curry the favor of the majority community is a Faustian bargain. Whatever one thinks one might get from the deal is never worth selling your soul over. As my father once said to a co-worker who insisted that African-Americans were demanding that things change too quickly (for his comfort) during the Civil Rights Movement: [i]"What am I supposed to tell my children? That their lives don't matter, and that your comfort is more important than their lives and their futures?" [/i] Needless to say, when confronted by his own moral bankruptcy that co-worker had nothing to say in reply. There is only "unrest" because we are still a country where "Some people are More Equal Than Others".

If you think that somehow makes you look bad, or "appear immoral" by comparison...THEN THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM. The fact that you don't like what you see in the mirror, may be someone---or something---telling you that it might be time to re-examine your values. Or that you are failing to "walk the talk" of your stated values. Either way, it has **nothing** to do with me. That's the point that Conservative don't "get" about Progressives. You guys assume that we are just like you, and that we see and relate to the world the same way you do....just flipped around. The fact is we don't. We see and relate to the world in FUNDAMENTALLY different ways. Ways many of you have difficulty grasping because you're so deeply entrenched in your own views, and struggle to see the world in any other way.

I think the main concern is that it's not a representation, so much as a mocking caricature. If they changed it to, say, an ACTUAL Native American leader, and a proper image, then it'd be better.

I will agree that the design is dated, but it hardly warrants the removal of it and labeling it as racist, as I have seen mentioned a few times while researching it a bit.

It kinda is racist, though. While less so, it was meant as a mocking caricature. Be like having a team mascot be "Lil' Black Sambo". Flew then....not so much now. Now, if they keep the name, and update the logo to, say, something classy (think like, an Iroquois leader or the like, rendered less as a fictitious caricature), then fine.
