On music

Acknowledging the fact that this experiment was conducted years ago, it still triggers me. Shows that skill alone is not enough, quality is not enough, just never seems to be enough. I just grow weary of being a minority in my social environment, nobody for me to talk to music about that understands. I'm not saying everyone has to like classical music, but around here, there is no diversity. Every tranced child in my school is just a copy of the next, and they stay cemented. I see myself moving from one mini society of students to the next, but not one to claim as my own. Even if there was a society who liked some of the music I like, I feel that they would be snobbish about it, or too picky. Apologies for the rant. Felt like it had to be said. The video is interesting though, if you've got some minutes to spare.
This is the piece he played, if anyone who's never heard of it is curious http://youtu.be/myXOrVv-fNk I believe Chaccone was written by Bach after his wife passed away
• http://www.timesonline.com/entertainment/local_entertainment/mashed-up-in-pittsburgh-classical-and-rap-fit-together-in/article_063be7ec-e18a-11e5-84d3-63733f7171d6.html Guy from my city's symphony. Had the same problem as I did, and instead embraced it to include both sides. I think that's an honorable perspective; I'm going to try to adapt it.

    • Though I understand the basis of the video, I also look at the context of the situation. This is rush hour in a busy subway, most of the people there are either trying to get to work or heading home after a long shift. Now on to your rant about music, which I agree with. There is very little diversity when it comes to music in society, people just fit into there little group and stay there without really exploring other genres or understanding the structure. I personally gave up on trying , occasionally I'll have a nice conversation about music but they're very few and far between. I honestly don't limit myself by genre as I appreciate what they are and what shaped them over the years, I'd rarely let people listen to my music back in high school because of how varied it was.

All through high school, I struggled with the uniformity of the CDs friends brought to listen to in car rides (live in Hawaii, long distance between everything). I questioned them all the time "Why do you like Rap so much? Do you even know what they're talking about? Do you associate with it? But the answer was always everybody loves it, it's cool. It became a joke when I would pop in one of my CDs, from classical to Manson to Nujabes to hiphop to foreign, whatever it was, they always hated it all :( Nowadays, I listen to as much music as I can, and I take note when something moves me, whether it's the melody, the lyrics, the beat... I love listening to EVERYTHING, as long as I like it. ;) Music should be taught in schools again, it's such a big part of human expression, a language that connects us even without words. And as far as popularity, it's obvious talent is not enough or not always necessary to be a big hit. Uniformity is bad in my book, it puts us in little bubbles. The internet does a lot of that if you're not careful, customizes your searches, your likes, so you never look beyond your bubbles.
