so more yearly phone models with only minor improvements..

unfortunately this is the trend with tech companies for the past couple of years. Half my friends cant fathom the idea of owning a smartphone for longer than two years. Apparently after two years a phone becomes outdated/ irrelevant and ugly somehow?

It's the software that's the problem, it's too ahead of the past smart phones. For instance, you can play Bastion on an iPhone 5 fine, but it doesn't even want to attempt to play it on my 4. Although most 'high-end' apps are games anyway, I'm fairly sure, so upgrading to a new phone isn't completely necessary.
