What you're saying doesn't make any sense. You still have to ability to view things the way you used to. It's just not the default option anymore.
Now, you have that ability and more.
Why is more ability not better?

Have you noticed that the popular section is always the same for a long period of time? Have you noticed that even if you switch to latest it still shows most of the popular threads listed in the popular section? Have you also noticed that the new threads are near the bottom?

The popular and debated filters are heavily weighted to prefer more recent threads. It is designed so that popular stuff can't stay popular just because it was created earlier. That being said, you can always set it to "Latest" and it works as you want.

I've been thinking about this lately... Given that we can also filter based on when the topic was created, does it not make sense to weight recent threads less heavily? When all four tme filters give more-or-less the ssame results, it doesn't add a lot of value. Personally, I really am interested in what topic has been the most popular of all time. If I find that view to be too stagnant with aold topics, I can simply filter on a shorter duration.
Have you noticed that the popular section is always the same for a long period of time?
How often do you think what's "popular" is supposed to change? We already have the ability to filter that list by what's been created in the last day, week, year, etc. Right now, that doesn't change much, but only because the new version of the site has only been out for a few weeks.
Have you noticed that even if you switch to latest it still shows most of the popular threads listed in the popular section?
Stands to reason, doesn't it? If it's popular, people are probably posting in it fairly frequently. Again, though, you have the ability to filter out other threads by only looking at what was created this day, week, year, etc.
Have you also noticed that the new threads are near the bottom?
When sorted by popularity, topics are listed from most popular to least, independant of when they were last posted in. Again, this stands to reason. I'm still not seeing your point.
