If it's that box to claim you need a thousand to buy it, dont think of it as a donation and that's a thank you gift they give in exchange.

It's the one to the right of the coin donation button. It says specifically that you have to donate 1,000 captain's coins to claim (and the community has to have hit milestone 4). I hadn't donated 1,000 coins until late last week, but I had made other donations (map coordinates, some planetary mats). I've now donated 1,349 coins and still can't claim that one. Regardless of whether it's a donation or a "thank you", I haven't been able to claim it yet, though I've met the requirements to do so.

That's a reward that you can purchase repeatedly by donating 1,000 Coins each time. Your TOTAL number of Coins donated is irrelevant.

Ah, I see. Yeah, the description is not very clear at all, and it's generally counter to how Bungie does things like this. The community goal was to donate stuff, not hoard stuff and then donate it. Ah well, it's just a community event and it's not like that reward is any different than the other boxes you get - and I got a few from just doing stuff it seemed, so no big deal.
