Can I get a generally accepted definition of "casual gamer?"

I put in time on D2, and consider myself a serious gamer. I don't feel my life is defined by my triumph score or seals, and don't have a panic attack if my k/d drops below the paltry 0.40 I think it is now. But even so, still "serious." But, with no clear-cut criteria as to what is defined as a "GAMER," I'd like to see if there is a base set of factors to determine if I fit the label. That way, I'll know in the future whether my opinion on forum discussions hold any weight or not. A serious question, I'm not looking to ruffle feathers.

  • Casual gamer to me is someone who doesn’t care to put in the time to get good at the game. I consider anyone with a KDA of 1.5 or below a casual. Why does KDA matter? Because I’m trying to win, unless I am purposely trying to carry in trials, I won’t join a group unless it is a 1.5 KD (not KDA) or above. For PvE, a casual is someone who simply does not care about completing a raid, learning mechanics, or completing GM’s with efficiency. You can always tell when you are in a good gm squad. My fastest LightBlade Gm was 19 minutes. With casuals, you can expect it to hit 25-35 minutes. At the end of the day, YMMV.

Judging by this community, a "casual" is anyone who doesn't have decked out pvp stats regardless of their time played or accomplishments. You can have 300+ Solo GM completions, 1,000 of Master Raid completions, every seal completed, every gold rolled gun fully master worked, triple 100 stats on all your builds, hundreds of Flawless runs etc... but if you disagree with anyone regarding something in pvp and they stat check you and find out you didn't do so well in your last few games you're a no skill casual who gets carried by everyone, skill issue, meta crutch etc... This applies even if your stats are ever so slightly better than the person who disagrees with you too. They'll cherry pick other stats to make theirs seem better in comparison. Lol Casual to me is just someone who has a vested interest in the game but they just don't play that much. You can be fairly good at raiding, pvp, GMs etc and still be a casual. Destiny is a game you frequent but it's not your sole game. Maybe you go hard when a season drops and then maybe you only play for 1-2 hrs a day (or week) afterwards. Causal, Hardcore, sweatlord, try hard, skrub or noob, you're a Guardian nonetheless.

    • There are different levels: I'm a Seal hunter, so I do everything in my power to get them, but I also take end game content seriously. My goal is to do everything without dying. In spite of this, I consider myself a casual gamer. I think the most hardcore of us all are more like the streamers that get paid to do this stuff, go out and find cheeses or exploits, and play for hours upon hours a day. I think you're a serious casual - you like the game, but you're not going to chuck your controller/mouse/keyboard out of the window because you lost a round of Trials.

    • Everyone has their own opinions on this but for me a casual gamer is a gamer that doesnt have a huge amount of time for gaming, only occasionally (or never) partakes in endgame content. Plays for the fun of it and doesnt take gaming too seriously.

The term casual is thrown around loosely these days. I was just called a casual by a 1587 player while I’m 1601 with a raid weapon equipped and a dungeon emblem equipped. I’ve also completed 3 seals and finishing my 4th this season. So yeah he’s clueless and you see plenty of that stuff from mid level players that are confused enough to think they’re elite. It’s a tactic of trying to use stat shaming to win a debate on the boards and invalidate someone’s opinion. It’s a straw man argument unless you’re discussing specifics involving an end game activity that a player doesn’t participate in. Like not doing GMs and insisting on changes etc.

          • There really isn’t a definition everyone will agree on. The way I see it there are determining factors and even then it’s a wide range. Time invested, accomplishments, how you engage. But higher values in some can make up for lower areas. Not to mention a person could be a more hardcore Destiny player, but be a PvE casual. Spending as little time PvE, barely accomplishing much there, but putting in hundreds of hours a a season in PvP. Some people could play Destiny for 20 or more hours a week. But only plays with the same couple of people, never keeps up with Destiny news or metas, or other going’s on themselves. Even if they have some seals and titles, and maybe a Raid completion or two, I would call this person casual. On the flip side of a person on most weeks played only 8-10 hours a week, but dives into build crafting, seems out exotics, likes to Raid and GM, or try going Flawless in Trials every weekend, and has at least a bit of knowledge of what is in the TWAB every week because they seek out that information. I would not call that person casual just because they may not have the time to invest 30 hours a week. There’s no exact number or rule.

              • Dedicated... that's what I would define you. People think there is only 2 different camps, casual or hardcore. There are more players in the middle of these two definitions. Casuals- Players who don't care about much and check out the game every once in a while with low investment.rho care about some things, play regularly but not religiously while generally may want to strive to be better in some ways and not in others. Hardocores- Players who look at fine details, always trying to improve and wanting to be challenged. Constantly wanting to master the game regardless of the time they need to do so. I personally do not put hardcore players in X hours per day/week. Some hardcore players I know don't play more than twice a week but always focus on being efficient with their time. I have also seen people at ranks 900+ be terrible at the game and just like farming for the sake of it. That's a dedicated player at best with a focus.

That way, I'll know in the future whether my opinion on forum discussions hold any weight or not. A serious question, I'm not looking to ruffle feathers.[/quote] It's subjective at best. Casual players typically play the game as a way to pass the time. Go in, do some seasonal stuff, do some core Playlist stuff, and book out. Hardcore players typically skate by the easy stuff and aim for the harder activities like raids, GMs, etc. I say typically because there are casual players who enjoy endgame and there are Hardcore players who only sit in the core playlists (like pvp sweats). By and large, though, it's mindset, and also a spectrum. There are dedicated players with casual attitudes and there are hardcore players who only log on a few days a week. Take you, for example. You probably play more often than I have in the last few weeks. However, when I play, it's to do sub 30m DSCs, farm KF clears, and try to get better at Vow (despite having nearly 70 clears, I'm not satisfied with my performance). You, on the other hand, don't care about your KD (which is fine), you don't raid (which is also fine), and it seems like you stray away from the harder content. But you play more often than I do, at least over the last few weeks. I am on the hardcore side of the spectrum, but I'm not terribly dedicated right now. You're on the casual side of the spectrum, but you're more dedicated. That's why time spent in game doesn't matter, like some of these clowns claim lol. Dedication doesn't translate to mindset. There are people who have played way more than I have in the last 3 weeks, but they're just doing strike playlists. When I log in, it's to basically only do the hard stuff. It's the only way I can stay engaged. If that's a bad example I'll try again. Hardcore players are always saying "more more more I want more" whether it's better pvp KD or faster/more raid clears, or going solo flawless in the latest dungeon. They're always challenging themselves one way or another. Casual players are always saying "what I'm doing is fine, I'm having fun". They don't put much energy into challenging themselves and are just minds happy to be playing the game as is. There's nothing wrong or right about either mindset. It's just how we play the games individually.

If you play a game whether it's 30 minutes twice a week or 16 hours a day, your opinions, wants, and needs, matter all the same. There is no "casual or hardcore", there is only "players and not players". So opine away guardian.

                  • You're a casual gamer when you casually play the game. What most people assume and get wrong is often the traits of a casual gamer which you mentioned but can be applied to a hardcore gamer as well. Casual has double meanings when it comes to games rather then it's clear cut one. People try to associate low stats and skill with casual while those traits can be applied to anyone. I have significantly more playtime then most but because I don't have the seals, clears, high k/d, and a base I would even be considered casual and I mostly play this game everyday. Your opinion is your opinion and you don't need to be hardcore or casuals to make one you're gonna be judged anyway so why even care?

                  • Your opinion matters, but the weight of your opinion is less when you're speaking to a subject matter you may have little to no experience with. Casual is how you treat the game in terms of playtime and how serious you take the game via how much effort you put into it. There isn't a generally accepted term/definition. I'd consider someone casual if they don't specifically put forth effort into improving their game play and setting goals be it achievments, seals, triumphs, increasing a # like raid clears or K/D or whatever.

If you cannot be at the top of the leaderboard with 50,000 kills in on e Comp match…you are a casual. If you do not main a Hunter all day, everyday, and dress like a Hunter outside this game, then….you are a casual.
