Based on various lore, I suspect that calus is a bodiless entity, spirit, and he uses the fungi to link his mind to the leviathan. His end goal seems to be a new body made from the leviathan.
Glykon lore mentioned calus's body was on the verge of death. Then after his meeting with the Witness he seems to have become a spirit. A scan patrol talks about how the fungi links different dimensions and can connect a user to the darkness.

Oh! This is really intresting. I wonder if at the end of this season we will have the chance to finally "see" Calus somehow, like in his spirit form. And, if he is actually fusing with the Leviathan, how are we going to get rid of if. Maybe through Rasputin when Ana will fix it?
