More unique cosmetics should be earnable in destiny.

I think the title system in Destiny is probably the best change in the cosmetic department of the game. You sink in a ton of time to earn a title you can display, which makes it more worthwhile. If you have the unbroken title, people know you aren't just some scrub to mess with, or at least shouldn't try to. But in the other departments...its pretty bad. I'm going to use gears of war 3 as my example, because I think that is one of the MOST properly done cosmetic systems I have seen in the games I've played over my life time. There were titles, emblems, characters and weapon skins you could earn. Each of these had a quest that required you to put in time to unlock. As an example: There was a title for EVERY single weapon in the game, each of which had 4 tiers to the title so you could be called like...bronze rifle master or something like that, which means you had the first tier in the rifle based weapons complete. It's not a prestigious title, but you would work your way up to onyx rifle master (I think I have it backwards?). I don't remember them all, but the point is, is that you would work towards a unique type of reward. If you got a TON of kills with a weapon, you could have a title called "x master" which is basic, but it still got the point across. There were also far more difficult titles to get as well, such as "seriously 3.0" which means you earned every single medal (which is what the titles were tied to) maxed them out AND earned every single achievement which is extremely long and difficult. A guy with that title is usually not someone to mess with. But this took time and rewarded you with not only a unique title (although not exactly cool) but also it gave you prestige. It's like with a job, being called something like a master technician or electrician holds prestige and people know you are competent at what you do or at least should be. The weight to it feels nice. This same thing carried into the characters you could unlock as well. A character would require you to find all of the collectibles in the campaign, some wanted you to master all of the weapon types, some wanted you to just play the game a whole bunch and so on. Again, a unique reward that you can actually show off. One that makes you feel and look like a bad ass. Same thing for some weapon skins (which there were extra cosmetic skins you could pay for) . I don't remember which were earnable, but I know they existed, I believe with the gold and silver gear you had to earn like onyx rifle and weapon master. Same thing with emblems. The point I'm trying to make is, is that Destiny's cosmetic shop, although I'm not necessarily against, gets way too much of the dev time when these same exact cosmetics could be earnable in the game, via a quest or something. Like...why doesn't each ritual or pinnacle weapon get a quest after earning the weapon that gives you a unique ornament? Why can't there be something extra and somewhat cool to chase after the weapon is unlocked to give you that sensation of prestige other than just getting the same crap everyone else can get? Why does it have to be locked behind a paid for cosmetic shop? Sure it comes into the bright dust area and you can "earn" that currency, but there's no weight or prestige to it and it just feels like missed potential. Although not a good example, the braytech were wolf you got from earning all of the masks. There might not be prestige behind it, but you feel like you worked towards a unique reward. Like in Destiny 1 with the raid ornaments (I might be remembering them wrong). You felt like a bad ass and you looked like one too. You earned it and so people knew that if you had it on you knew what you were doing (like I said, I don't know if I'm remembering it right, but hopefully you get the point). In Destiny 2 a person doing a last wish petra's run gets what an emblem? That's just disappointing and could have been so much more. I understand they want to lock less of the rewards behind specific activities that not everyone can do, but having incentive besides "double rewards" when you have already likely earned everything 50 times over by that point is just disappointing. Like why don't you get an exclusive 1k ornament or something? Like when you did the legend of acrius quest? There's just...not enough effort put into earning things to make us look bad ass after the main content is gone and that's just not good for a game claiming it's an mmo. Those cosmetic things that could be farmable and give a sense of accomplishment just don't exist very much in Destiny 2 and it makes something as simple as an ornament feel more like a participation trophy and not an actual badge of accomplishment when it could very easily be that. Even if it's only a single ornament for the ritual weapons and the rest are paid for, that would be perfectly fine, but that system doesn't exist and so the only things left to do afterwards is endlessly farm the same activities for the same rewards while using the same normal looking gear, unless you pay for it. This is one of the things I give Destiny 1 the biggest props for. It MADE you look bad ass when you WANTED to look bad ass. Is this maybe elitism? I don't know, but being capable of doing things others can't do should definitely earn you exclusive gear. Otherwise it's more optional than eververse is. Again, I'm not against having a cosmetic shop, but the ratio between what's earnable and what's paid should be tweaked. I hope this didn't come off as elitism or something similar. I like cosmetic stuff and it would be great to earn cosmetic gear for the weapons or gear I spent time getting. Like if I were to get divinity it would still be great to have the weapon, but some super bad ass ornament I can only get by completing the title or something would likely give me more desire to get said title.

Cosmetics are all fine and dandy as long as Bungie isn't still using Eververse as a filler as they are right now. Destiny used to be a looter shooter that in D2 turned into more of a useless cosmetic game. The effort that is being put into this game is being put in the wrong places and looking at things like Ikora alone having weapons but only 4 of them and nothing else? it is depressing when looking at D1 how the vendors used to get a full inventory, now it's just Eververse that gets a full inventory. I don't care what anyone says, this is wrong in so many ways on what this game was created for and what it has become today.

I like the idea in principle, earning titles and medals and displaying them proudly is important to people, but aside from the very obvious title below our name, the game just isn’t set up to display this kind of stuff in a way that makes people take notice. The only other obvious way would be our gear, but that’s a tough one too. Take exotic class items for example. Players would grind for these items and wear them proudly, to the amazement and awe of... who? I honestly don’t remember noticing one exotic class item in the game, and if I did I don’t think I would be amazed by it. They just weren’t that impressive and gear is not part of the information spectrum that players actively scan at a distance. It’s also hard to imagine Bungie creating new gear for a wide variety of accomplishments that a majority of players will never achieve. [Edit: I know this focuses on the public aspect of the issue, and I’m all for earning stuff that really only we care about ourselves. Personal satisfaction is a huge thing and you’re right, right now we don’t have a lot of things to earn that fill this void. There is a little too much “sameness” in the game. Strike loot was a good start but who knows if that will ever come back.] The hard truth is that Bungie has to weigh the impact of adding new features vs the cost of actually developing them. As it is now, beyond titles and actively inspecting another player, the game doesn’t offer easy opportunities to show off what we’ve accomplished.

          • See, the problem is you mention Gears 3 yet ignore the fact that Gears 4 and 5 exist and do the same thing Destiny does or worse. I could also say that Halo 3 had the best free unlocks of all time and be right in my own opinion. The problem is that Halo 4 and 5 exist and, guess what? They do WORSE than Destiny does. The issue is, it's easy to look at the past to games that were supposed to be the end of their run so they pull out all the stops as a "Thank you" to the playerbase. But Destiny is a game that's supposed to be supported and constantly cranking out content every so often so players keep playing. It's not a solo, secluded title like Gear or Halo, it's an ever growing, expanding, and changing world and that, coupled with horrible changes in the industry itself, is why they don't give away much for free. It sucks, but it's how things are in 2019, just as how Gears and Halo were how they were in the late 2000's.

            • I feel you on titles, literally a waste of time. When some one tells me I got "insert title here" it's cool but for what ? Do you get a special weapon? Ornaments? Special mod? Special armor set? Nah. When people got excited for titles first thing I thought of was "if there isnt incentive what's the point? Imo unbroken is the only thing to wave your dreg around about but even then its diluted because of how easy it is now and the cheaters. I play pve when the chase is something that's going to help me feel powerful not inflate my ego because there is a word on top of my head

                • If you think I'm reading that wall of text you're wrong. If you think more cosmetics should be earned through gameplay achievements, I wholeheartedly agree. But Bungie doesn't. This has been a thread topic every week since Destiny 2 launched. And Bungie has only added a few "exotic" ships in a few activities.

                  • I just got done with 5 days of grinding to get the one piece of armor I needed to reach 950 (without the Artifact) on my Hunter. See when they adjusted the drop rate for pinnacle gear the drop rate for everything else went down the toilet. So I had to farm Prime Engrams and hope I'd get that one item I needed from one of them. I almost quit playing the game. Seriously it was frustrating because RNG in games like this leads to a royal grind. I was so relieved when it finally dropped. But that wasn't a 'good' experience! I won't cherish that pair of boots 'forever'. In fact I sort of resent being put through that stuff because Bungie wanted to make 'upgrading' more 'eventful'. What I don't want is a grind like that for some cosmetic item. For God's sake Bungie just "take my Money". I just want cosmetics that look good. And there are in fact lots of items you can grind for that will improve your performance and looks. Items that aren't purely cosmetic. Items where when other players look at your character they know you put in the work to get them. So quit whining about cosmetics! Go farm the Iron Banner, or Escalation Protocol, or Black Armory, or Garden of Salvation... etc. And STOP trying to tell Bungie to give you cosmetics.

Bungie doesn't do it because they think they can get away with it Several of this season's items can easily have come from new content, but they chose Eververse instead because they think it'll make money We need to reach out to the general public because wallet voting seems to be the only way here, and our bickering about it here does nothing unfortunately

Problem is simple Unless it’s financial - Bungie don’t care D2 was built all wrong & even with Forsaken & Armour 2.0, It’s never recovered! It’s far too grindy Where’s the fun & reason to keep playing ? The anticipation, excitement, dread & fear when exploring ? Where are the surprises? The shocks? The writing depth and humour ? Destiny 1 was written & designed with far more heart & soul ...superior & fun!

                      • D2, with its watered down gameplay, is now little more than a pathetic greed-driven dress sim. It is far more likely that even more loot sources from playing the actual game will be removed and added to the EV paywall. Raid ships anyone? Thing is, Bungo - even taking into account how their philosophy has changed from making great games to just ripping off customers with subpar games and overpriced digital crap - wouldn't be quite so greedy if they weren't making money from such behaviour. If you've ever spent even one single pound at the Bungo greed store, you are part of the problem, part of the reason why D2 is such a pathetic joke compared to the fun D1 offered.

Maybe this is something they could do with vendors going forward. Put this in place of the shader and emblem quests or just add another level to them that has ornaments or something similar once you've unlocked the emblem. As an example, I finished the season 8 crucible quest that rewards shaders and an emblem. Maybe add a 4th tier to that quest that gives another cosmetic reward for people that play a lot. The season pass is something else they make look at. I'm rank 127 now, but so what. All I get now are emblems every 5 ranks.
