Solstice Event: Thoughts

A fair warning, not everything I am going to say is absolutely negative. In fact, to begin things off, I love the idea of this event. However, there is still a bit to talk about when it comes to this event's flaws. So, I recently got the first set of legendary armor. It has left me with the worst insomnia, but it feels incredibly wonderful to having had accomplished it. To take just a moment, Bungie has outdone themselves as far as its appearances and reason to earn the armor. As mentioned in the video above, it is great to know that the armor will be something we can use until the end of the Destiny 2 experience, instead of tossing it in the trash for blue armor when the next event comes out. Equally, it looks incredible! It makes some of loosing all of the Raid armor and Reckoning armor, even a few other scattered armor sets numbed a bit. However, this grind feels off for what the players were given last year. While the time to get these sets feels a LOT greater- which is GREATLY appreciated- there is a massive problem in which the sets add nothing new to the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, having those few orb objectives were amusing as I raced to see how quickly I could earn them, but that was about it. Before, we had these great campaign missions that showed us just how deadly this war was that we had breezed by the first time we played. The Dark Forest, in particular, was absolutely INSANE! Now, I do not believe it would be so terrible if it were just for one character, but that sparrow and the drive to play more than one character, takes away from the enjoyment. I can forgive the grind for one character because it feels like I earned the armor. Going back to the beginning, though, is a NIGHTMARE that I am prepared to awake from. On the topic, the EAZ feels pointless. Certainly, it is the most free-roaming space I have seen in Destiny's history and it makes me fanboy a bit (like I'm in Dishonored for a bit, gliding off the rooves of abandoned buildings), the space itself feels pointless in the long run. If it were not for the armor requiring me to go there, I probably would only pop by for the scenery. The rewards are nothing special. In fact, they feel less rewarding than rewards I can pick up from other events that are here to stay. Those boxes reward a few planetary materials, a lot of blue-engram sets, and some legendaries- It hurts when, last year, we had re-made campaign missions that made the Red War feel so much more destructive and got my blood racing. Certainly, it was SO difficult to pass, but it was rewarding and it had its purpose. The EAZ has nothing TOO rewarding and having to defeat so many mini-bosses almost ruined what could have been an otherwise great experience despite its flaws. Before I sound TOO negative, I DO enjoy a bit of a grind for this armor. The philosophy of taking the most beautiful armor in the game and telling us to work for it gets my blood pumping. There is also something wonderful and pleasing about taking a wrecked set of armor and transforming into the most sought out armor in the entire game. Equally, as mentioned in the video, I also enjoyed having a little bit of choice in beginning of the quest/grind. It felt nice to choose how I wanted to slaughter my enemies. xD And, again, the EAZ is a space that I will TRULY miss just for how free I felt. Instead of being in Strikes, where your options are one hallway with a few enemies, this area allowed me to feel unfamiliar and grow in my understanding, opportunizing me with alternative routes to find my targets. And the little scavenger hunt with the chests kept me on my toes, as well, so a very well done. Now, I am going to go out on a limb and say one little thing that some guardians may not like hearing: I miss Solstice Engrams. I know that trying to obtain the glows was pretty slow, but it at least allowed us to earn twice as many bright engrams, while we are already in so many different activities. Trying to earn enough bright dust for ONE set of armor glows would have been nicer if we knew this would be occurring maybe a month ago but, now, I shall accept that there is little chance that I could obtain all three of the sets. It is great to be given the ENTIRE event to grab these glows, but it is awfully expensive for us guardians who may have already cashed in our bright dust on the other goodies that we could not obtain from bright engrams (meaning the ones from the Opulence update that are NOT in the Best of Year One's). While you bet that I have problems with this event, I still love it just the same. It is more or less feedback in order to keep Bungie informed of what works and what does not.
