Tyrants Ch.30: Family

Table of Contents “Close the door.” Oliver gave Natalia a confused look but obeyed and shut the door, giving the four of them privacy. “Caden,” Natalia requested, since he was closest to her dresser, “There’s a gun in the dresser. Could you get it for me?” “Yeah,” Caden grunted, stepping over to the dresser and pulling open the top drawer. “Traveler!” He swore, shoving the drawer back in. “The second one,” Natalia corrected. “Pervert,” Hannah scolded harshly, then looked to Natalia and flashed an amused grin. “Coulda said so before,” Caden retorted, cautiously sliding open the second drawer. He extracted Natalia’s hand cannon, then shouldered past Hannah to give it to Natalia. Natalia set the revolver on her lap, running her hand over it. It was the same weapon she had used to save Hayden the day his parents died. A reminder of how it all started. “Hayden told us Alexander’s dead,” Caden muttered, rubbing his neck as he backed away, “Fargo, too, no doubt…” “Five of us now,” Natalia finished. The others were quiet, casting their eyes downwards. None of them were good friends but they all shared a bond. Eight of them had survived taking Fairmont, and they’d stuck together since then. They were a family in their own way now -wether they liked each other or not- and they were all affected by the loss. “We can’t win now,” Natalia stated, “If we don’t surrender we die.” “That’s comforting,” Hannah remarked sarcastically. “What’re you sayin’?” Caden questioned. Oliver pounded his chest plate with his fist, “That’s no way to think! We can still-“ “Oliver!” Natalia snapped, “Listen to me.” Now the trio was staring at her. She knew she wasn’t acting normal, but they were running out of time and she wanted to make herself very clear. They had to understand and follow her instructions. Hannah crossed her arms, “The hell’s gotten into you?” Natalia ignored her, “How many people do we have?” Caden held up five fingers and answered cautiously, “Us an’ Hayden make five. Then there’s -um- three more.” “So eight,” Oliver shrugged nonchalantly, flipping up his hand to indicate the walls of the fortress, “Doesn’t matter how many there are. We can win in here.” “Had to be eight?” Caden grumbled, “Why’s it always eight?” “Forget it,” Natalia dismissed, “Here’s what we’re gonna do. I said we can’t win. So if anyone still wants to fight, they can wait in front of the castle. The rest-“ All three of them tried to interject, but Natalia didn’t let them speak. “LISTEN!” She demanded, shocking them into silence. She took a deep breath, then continued, “We can’t win now, okay? We could fight in here ‘til we’re all dead, but we can’t win. So we surrender.” Natalia paused, smoothing the blanket over her legs and scanning the three who stood before her. They returned her gaze but said nothing, so she kept talking, “I won’t stop anyone who wants to fight. But I won’t let it happen in here. If we fought in here we could kill a lot of ‘em, but what’s the point if we’re gonna lose anyway? Let ‘em have their victory…and go back home alive.” Oliver straightened. Natalia could see the objection in his eyes. But he was still searching for words, so she guessed at what he would say and gave her reply, “Whoever wants to fight can fight. But whoever does is gonna die, okay? Fight all you want but do what I say. You tell the others that they’ll die if they fight, got it? Everyone else walks away and we surrender.” The others looked between each other. Natalia waited, and Caden eventually spoke first, “You really think we can’t win?” Natalia answered softly now, “We can’t win this. Avery wins, and I’m okay with that.” “So we just surrender?” Hannah scoffed. “Or die,” Natalia corrected, “If you don’t want to die, wait with me.” “I’ll fight,” Oliver volunteered eagerly. Caden turned his head to Oliver, “What, you want to die?” “Ha!” Oliver huffed, stuffing his hand into the bag on his belt, “I’ve lived for this moment! Listen here!” He pulled out a folded parchment and opened it, then began to read it aloud for all to hear, “I am Oliver Petrov. A man’s wor-“ “Hold on!” Hannah guffawed, grabbing Oliver’s wrist and snatching the paper away from him, “You wrote this garbage down?!” She held the parchment up to the light with one hand, using the other to ward off Oliver as she read in a mechanical drone, “A man’s worth is determined by the mark he leaves on the world and how he dies. I have killed many people to show my worth, proving that I am the better man. If you are reading this, then I have died a glorious death in battle and-pfff-hah! I can’t-haha!” Hannah broke down laughing, letting Oliver take back his note and return it to his pocket. “Well…” Caden muttered, “I s’ppose that explains a lot…” “I was right,” Hannah giggled as her laughter died down, “You are an idiot!” Oliver said nothing, crossing his arms and sulking silently. “Me too,” Caden mumbled, “I’ll fight, too…” “What?” Hannah gasped in disbelief, “Are you all daft?!” “No,” Caden groaned, “Doesn’t matter what we do. They’re gonna bust in guns blazin’ an’ kill us all anyway, right? If I’m gonna die, I wanna at least put up a fight.” “Avery wouldn’t do that,” Natalia assured, “She’s-“ “They’re warlords!” Caden barked, throwing out his hands, “Stop pretendin’ you’re friends with Avery! She’s just another warlord an’ she’s here to kill us! They all are! She’ll put a bullet in your head the second she lays eyes on ya!” “AAAGH!” Hannah roared, kicking Natalia’s bed frame so hard it shook, “Traveler’s CRACK!” Caden shied away from the raging woman as she threw her tantrum, “Hell am I supposed to do, huh?! If I stay they kill me! Can’t hide in this hellhole! An’ if I run I’ll die o’ starvation or cold if nothin’ else gets me first!” She kicked the bed frame again, with less force than before as her fury came to a simmer, “Light! Fine! We’re all dead! I’ll fight too, then!” Natalia didn’t bother trying to dissuade them. She had put them in this situation, and they could make their own decisions. “Go then,” Natalia ordered, kicking off her blanket and swinging her legs over the bedside. She couldn’t think of any parting words for them, and knew they didn’t want to hear any. Hannah huffed indignantly and shoved her way past Caden and Oliver as she hissed, “Thought I didn’t have to die in this Traveler-forsaken tomb!” Natalia watched her yank open the door and storm out. Caden and Oliver lingered for a moment, then shuffled after her. “Oliver,” Natalia called, and the stout man stopped, “Get me some paper an’ tape.” Oliver mulled the request over, then beamed, “Yes, my queen. Inspired by my note?” Natalia forced a smile. It was nice being around someone who could smile even though they had just volunteered to die. These people had many flaws, but there were things about them that were beautiful. She was glad to have them as her third family. “Yeah,” she affirmed, “A lot o’ paper. Don’t forget the tape. Be fast.” Oliver bolted away, his heavy footsteps resounding in the hall. Natalia took the revolver in one hand and planted her feet on the icy floor, ignoring the aches in her body and standing with purpose. Oliver had guessed correctly, he had inspired Natalia. She hadn’t given them the whole truth. When it was all over, she wanted Hayden to know.
