“Games As A Service” is FRAUD

i responded with this video in another post and someone said it should be its own post. edit* here is another copy of the link! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tUAX0gnZ3Nw i know this is a long watch but ALL gamers should see it. along with these companies trying to misrepresent video games as a service and not a good (primarily what’s in the video), what’s happening is we are essentially investing in these companies with no reward for our risk. we don’t get a stake in the company. we don’t get royalties. really, we often don’t even get exclusive preorder rewards that don’t drop at a later date for everyone else..but we take ALL of the risk because our money is used as the cushion. no other investors would accept these terms. and it’s all of these “games as a service” situations, not just destiny. the demand is clear: make your game good enough to charge a subscription (for a set amount of time) or stop masquerading your game as a “service.” if anyone is seeing this and not wanting to watch such a long video, i PROMISE it will save you hours of headache once you peek behind the curtain and can start holding these companies accountable by not preordering and not buying a game until it’s been reviewed and you know it’s up to snuff. i was also reminded to mention that MANY reviews are paid for so assess those sources critically. we are in this together. these games are FOR US and there are more of us than there are of them. if you don’t agree, that’s fine but i hope enough of us do so we can make it better for us and everyone else. ✊ see you out there in the wild!

  • I have no regrets about the money I have spent on this game. Not even a little bit. Those of you who spend sixty bucks hoping you've bought yourself higher purpose packaged in a game....well....you will just continue to be disappointed.

    • It's not. MMOs have been doing it for decades, you're just an entitled brat with the strangest tinfoil hat on? You pay for a service, you receive it. You are entitled to nothing else.

      •
“Games As A Service” is FRAUD
A fraud for some. Awesome for others. Which is why Destiny should probably just go the route of WoW and become a true monthly subscription based game. They won't need to develop content for solos because solos most likely won't pay the monthly sub. Not enough content for them. They won't need to develop matchmaking for randoms because those without dedicated teams won't buy the monthly sub. Destiny is a social game, right? No dedicated team, no need to play. They don't need to worry about pvp average and below average players, because they certainly won't pay the monthly fee to be farmed by others. But they can focus all of their development time/money on the most challenging content that requires sublime full team communication and high level skill. They can tune the weapons and sandbox anyway they want because the people still paying the sub will be giving Bungie unmitigated permission to treat them as they wish. Now, how much will this monthly subscription fee need to cost? It won't be cheap if you are going to focus new content on a relatively small segment of the historical player base.

      • What are we installing when we insert the disc we buy at the store? What’s behind the gate at Bungie’s server? Say D3 drops tomorrow, and you don’t buy it - better yet, say you never give Bungie another dime, do you lose access to D2. When was the last time you paid for D1? Did you lose the right to pay? No one has purchased a subscription to play any destiny game. They may develop the game as SAAS, which is where it comes from, but it’s not a service.

Should be taken to court, and force them to face the law. Biased tbh, because i just want to see some studios imprisoned, and forcefully loved, daily.

            • It's a global false economy. Most of the things are moving to * as a service. Games were always bound to do this as hits had to be monetized by investors. If private studio were doing it they won't care but investors and share holders will always demand long term and continuous ROI. Bungie always had someone on their ar*e chasing for money and this is what we got. It is a subscription model just like Netflix or Prime. If they don't produce good people will leave. But with the power of hype, it's always possible to replace them because unfortunately game stores are not obliged by statuary rights because of entertainment sector stuff. Think of it like going to cinema and not enjoying the movie. You cannot ask for your money back! This loophole is what will keep these companies alive.

            • You call it “fraud” and then refer to it as a “misrepresentation”. While fraud CAN, and often does, include misrepresentation, they are separate terms. For fraud, you would have to prove that you were intentionally misled. Intent is the key. A misrepresentation could just be broken promises, content that didn’t make the final cut, features that became not feasible or not practical given limitations, etc. You would have to prove that these things were said, promoted, advertised, etc., for the sole purpose of taking your money without any real ability to achieve these ends or that they already knew that these things were not going to be in the game, but promoted them anyways, for profit. Almost always, these companies intend to have these features, promote them, however, something goes awry with budget, timing, and practicality. TLDR; Misrepresentation is not Fraud, but it can be if you can prove “intent”.

              • I wouldnt necessarily call them fraud, but the concept is tired, and I think more people have wised up to them not being that great of a deal. I think I'm going to go back to single player games for story content and the yearly CoD for my PvP. Anthem The Division 2 Destiny 2 I've lost my patience with all of them, and my friends have too.

                • the real scam here is paying full price for a game then having that company try to sell you micro transactions in game. either make the game free and have micros or have a COMPLETE game for full retail price. we are all getting ripped off by greedy companies reusing existing assets to make "new" content.

Problem is people do not like subscription games world of warcraft and final fantasy are like the last few. I know there might be more. There has been alot of games die from subs and have to go free to play with monetizing like swtor. I personally would pay a sub for destiny to have constant live updates and support, servers etc. But I dont think the community as a whole would. And we do not deserve a stake in a company just for playing or paying that's what stocks are for.

                      • Idk I have mixed thoughts on it as I feel in concept has or something similar could lead to great games on scales otherwise unreachable. I will say for me a balance needs to be found between content I pay for and what is part of being a loyal customer. I don't mind the annual pass content d2 has tried but I feel like the engrm system needs a rework where in things like ornaments after a season has passed should be something players can grind and work towards. A good business knows that doing things like this can lead to more willing profit as players might feel less pressured and ripped off un the long run I agree the current examples of Haas aren't great overall but a discussion could lead us to a place we all like.

                      • of course it is a fraud. it's a empty promise by developers that will at some point release a full and intact game after the launch of a incomplete broken and chopped up version. Anthem is a perfect example of a failed "games as a service" product

                        • Disagree. 1. In this digital age with broadband internet and cheap mass storage...EVERY game is a service these days. The notion of a game being a fixed product is as obsolete as a Blockbuster video store in this Netflix age. 2. The issue here is that you have a console gaming community that is deeply attached to this outdated notion of a "complete game". When the reality is that they want the continual update, servicing and expansions of games.....BUT DON'T WANT TO PAY THE FAIR MARKET VALUE OF THAT LEVEL OF SERVICE. So many of you think that a one time expenditure of $60 entitles you to an endless flow of new content. It doesn't. The reason why console devs have to resort to all of these elaborate monetization schemes is BECAUSE console gamers have made it clear that they wont' support paying sub fees. 3. Conversely, this is not an issue on PC where MMOs----the orginal games-as-services----have thrived for decades. So PC gamers have long established their willingness to invest in games and establish a long term relationship with them. Both in terms of time....and money 4. For those who dont' have a monetary objection, many console gamers are simply not aware of he fact that NONE of these games EVER launch in a mature state. They always take years of refinement and additions of new content before they finally reach their potential. Which every MMO player who signs on for Year 1 of a new MMO understands. ...and its why very few MMOs start on console. They almost always start on PC.....go through their growing pains.....and THEN are ported over to console.

Games that use servers are a service. Once the money stops flowing, it shuts down.

                          • Games are software. Software is not a good. EULAs establish this. If you don’t like this then don’t buy games. Hell the console makers along with micro and apple reserve the right to brick your machines for not following their agreements. It’s just the way the digital age works.

                              • I just think it has been a really weird last 2 years for gaming. Three of the biggest gaming corporations have delivered disappointing products, being Bungie, Bioware and Bethesda respectively. Funny that these compagnies have come with triple B games instead of triple A.
