Well like 15 million people purchased this game and only like maybe 400k still play it now, I am sure there is something wrong with the game if that many people stopped playing

  • Oo, I hear this thrown around a lot on the forms, and I need to explain something. It sounds bad that theh got cut that bad, but it is expected, and completely good. Something like cod ww2, or battlefield 1 both launched in a few months of each other and destiny, and both had crazy sales, with cod declaring it had 12 mil users on psn alone. Both are currently under 10k daily logins, and have just been dropping more and more players.

  • Registered users does not equal units sold, which is probably around half of RU. A household often has more than one RU. Roommates, romantic partners, spouses, and children all create the situation of a multiple registered user household.

  • Good point, but still, 15 million registered users down to maybe 400k is still a huge drop. I am sure Bungle will want more than 400k registered users when they try to launch their next game

  • Worse yet, D1 had 25M at one year and two months, whil D2 has 14.5 at one year and eight months. That's a 42% drop in growth (while adding a third platform). They even gave D2 Y1 away for free on console.

  • 15 million purchased it? That sounds a little far fetched. It would probably be more like 15 million people (or at least 15 million accounts) have played destiny.

  • Less than half i would think. Bungie hides their sales information because its obviously a failure for a game this size.

  • Yeah the thing was vanilla d2, it sucked. I had friends i used to play d1 all the time but they stopped playing d2 before curse of osiris came out. And never came back. if a game sucks then they just leave . Same things gonna happen when d3 comes out, millions on day 1, only difference is that if bungie can nail d3 launch then they'll retain more people on the long run, but not the millions on release day. That just how its goes, the 400k has been steady for quite awhile now. These are the people who actually care about the game. But if bungie knocks d3 out the park, more people will care about it initially and not just leave and play fortnite

  • That number includes people playing D1. It also includes people playing gambit, so it’s counting people twice. It also counts logins. So one person with 3 characters counts 3 times. If they sign in to gambit on all three, then it’s 3x2 for one person.

  • That is true, a lot of people bought Into the hype that the d2 beta was an old build and that the released game would be way better, but it was just the crappy beta that launched. D2 launched in such a poor state because they had to scrap the game and start over. Now they currently have a really good excuse to use that reasoning again and say it was because of the split with Activision, which is why I think they were cheering when it was announced. Not that they are finally free, but they have a great excuse as to why D3 will launch in an unfinished state

  • You could be right. Personally, I think the reason Activision allowed them to buy out the contract was because Bungie told them they needed an extension for D3 because they needed to reboot it.

  • Honestly looking at the cuts ATVI made to others around the same time as Bungie paints a picture that they’re really only interested in the series that print “-blam!- you” money every year or two. This came in the wake of Forsaken release which was the highest selling expansion across either game and the highest selling “game” off September. D2 has been a financial success... but it’s not a runaway success monster train. I’m glad Bungie is independent and believes in the product. I wish them well.

  • To be fair, Activision had them on contract for like 4 releases i think. They were supposed to release d2 instead of rise of iron, but they delayed it. Then had to scrap d2 and do a rushed release because the contract said they had to do a September release. Now they can release d3 whenever they want, they have complete control over the franchise now. I think the cheering was that they weren't on a schedule anymore, they don't NEED to have a September release, they don't NEED to have 2 dlcs and a new game every 2 years. If d3 comes out in 2021 or later then that would be awesome. Can you imagine bungie releasing a game that they worked on for 4-5 years and releasing it when they want and not when a contarct says so. Ttk and forsaken were the shit, can you imagine a full game like that? Now they can actually do it.

  • They did release a game they worked on for four to five years (D1) and release it when they wanted to (D1 got a one year release delay). They just threw away most of their work and started over in the eleventh hour. D2 would have had three years to complete (it also got a one year release delay) but they threw away most of their work and started over in the eleventh hour. Them having enough time has never really been the issue, but how they use that time has. They have almost never released anything when "a contract says so," and Activision tolerated year-long delays for both of their major releases and two years with no dlc whatsoever. You're asking us to imagine a scenario that has mostly happened already with mixed results at best.

Cool as a really developed game would be, they would likely run out of money before 2021 or later if they don't have a big release. Oops, like the post below me says not that I've scrolled down....

  • If they can release a full game that is the quality of TTK or forsaken than that would be amazing but they are struggling with these seasons with minimal content per season. It would be nice if D3 would launch in 2021. But tbh, I don't think destiny will survive that long with this drip fed content, lack of communication and constant nerfs for the sake of nerfs

  • Well to be fair, the season pass was an Activision thing, they said they were still going to do it because people had already bought it so they kinda had to roll with it. Bungie is basically split up into 3 right now, the people working on d2 (might be the live team, not sure), the people working on d3. And the people working on the mystery game. (They got like 500 million dollars or something crazy like that to work on a new IP , non destiny related, a new battle royal maybe?)

  • They got $100M from NetEase, and a few months later gave Activision between $100M-140M for the publishing rights to Destiny. Bungle had a hard enough time keeping D1 going while working on D2, so the idea of adding a third project is nutty.

  • Well there are rumors going around that the September release will be another annual pass. And if it is, this game will not last until 2021. Bungie could not make the season pass work when they had the backing of other studios and Activision, I seriously doubt they can make the annual pass work on their own

  • They recently rehired some community memebers for a 6 month contract, last time that happened we got forsaken. So we might not even get a September release. Idk man it's up in the air right now. But i think we'll be okay.

  • If they don't do a September release, Opulence better be amazing. People are already on the verge of leaving the game with all the nerfs they just announced with no mention of any buffs to make anything else viable options. Sure without Activision bungle can take their time, but with the current state of the game and lack of communication, I really do not think that the players will be around much longer. Well I am sure the few zealots that are devoted to the game will remain. But I think bungle would want to sell D3 to more people than that
