POWER FANTASY: Not That Simple

Disclaimer: any terminology used in this post is never meant to put one group of players above another. Everyone needs a spot at the table. Carry on. Power fantasy. Is it leaving? Was it ever here? Does it have an expiration date? The recent TWAB has concerned players voicing these thoughts and more. However, power fantasy is more complicated than that. There are different types of power fantasy. I'll give you an example. Player A loves explosions, destruction, melting bosses, walking all over waves of adds. Unlimited supers, lots of heavy, all that. Spectacle drives this player. Player B favors challenge, puzzles, strategizing, optimizing. Difficult encounters, complex raids, execution- heavy dungeons or Zero Hour type missions. Triumph drives this player. Bungie has to make both of these players happy. Destiny has to deliver, with each content drop, a boatload of Spectacle and a generous portion of Triumph. There are different kinds of players that have a certain level of favor for either of these power fantasies. But, as bungie described, simply increasing and increasing power to boost Spectacle will hurt a sense of Triumph. In the end, I just mean to say that those who favor Spectacle should realize the game is not just for them. There are many players who enjoy challenge. I have personally had enough of the naysayers. I want to be part of the conversation, too. But some people don't believe that I and other players like me exist. Power Fantasy is not leaving destiny. Orpheous Rig and Skull players will have to pick up orbs. That's been part of the game since forever. Bungie kept Wardcliff, Thousand Voices, Acrius, Prospector, and other DPS weapons untouched. There's still gonna be cheese. Let's all take a step back and look at the big picture. Thanks for the cool game Bungie.

    • Everyone (almost) could be happy if the game had difficulty settings. (Obviously excluding Gambit and other PvP activities) Easy - Just what it says. Offers no powerful rewards or pinnacle weapon progress. (Shouldnt even be an option really. It's only here in anticipation of "that one person"...) Normal - Bungies intended difficulty. All rewards and progress intact. Pretty much like they are now. Hard - All standard rewards plus medium chance to drop Exotic/Prime engram once per week per character per activity. (Like the 100,000 Nightfall thresholds extra powerful rewards) 10% more progress on percentage based objectives. Heroic - You will fail. A lot. But guaranteed 2nd Powerful reward drop upon completion. 25% more progress towards percentage based objectives. This is in addition to the minimum required light level already in place. But modified similar to how D1 worked.

    • Save the challenge stuff for raid-level activities The average content is nowhere near enjoyable or rewarding enough to warrant killing the spectacle

Everyone needs a spot at the table...

..In the end, I just mean to say that those who favor Spectacle should realize the game is not just for them...
How should Player A not expect spectacle in a fantasy loot shooter with aliens, space magic, glowey armor, fictional locations, giant towering enemies, guns that shoot all matter of energy beams and fire, and sci-fi vehicles? The hotness from the last holiday event was a special ornament that gave players glowing deer antlers! Perhaps it is Player B who is looking for that extra triumph where it doesn't exist? Destiny is not Dark Souls. It never will be. Destiny is a casual space fantasy looter shooter no matter how badly hardcore players want it to be their magnum opus of "gun skill" and "strategy" and "gamesense" (whatever the eff that is). This is a game that will never be competitive without a drastic overhaul to balance and dedicated servers to start and should not be taken seriously. There is endgame for sure, and titles, and other activities that are geared for extra challenge, but that's where it will end. When Destiny 2 launched, it was so short on spectacle (to attempt to make the game competitive for PVP) that players revolted and Bungie had to change it (slower movement, slower power generation, weak powers, weak abilities, etc). Since Forsaken, Bungie throttled power progress and is walking back their promise to "bring other things up and not nail the hot ones down", and players are revolting again.

You forgot about player C, who loves starting as B and getting to A.

          • I’m the type of player that begins at B and moves to A pretty quickly within a few weeks. I expect a challenge until my power is approaching the cap and I’ve completed the “challenge” a couple times and have experience. Then it should be easy and a power fantasy.

          • That’s definitely a crazy juggling act to perform, once I certainly couldn’t do. But much like you said, players want explosions and to be superheroes but to also be challenged. You certainly don’t want to play a back and forth game of making players more powerful and having to increase the difficulty of enemies, only to have to increase player power again, and again to have increase enemy difficulty to suit. That’s the power climb we want to avoid.

            • I can see your point here, but there are a lot more perspectives in the mix. Player A is not the only one to take issue with the nerfs. I personally am happiest when I'm failing but making progress. Success is just the end. But I want to use interesting and powerful (read as fun) gear in the process. As you pointed out, there will still be cheese, so what did the nerfs accomplish? I don't buy that we were at the power creep ceiling, and there was no other way to deliver or maintain challenging content. To me it just cut the fun factor.

              • Well 13 milli n people don’t think it’s a cool game so there that. Also difficulty in games like this comes from how content is designed. So this literally leaves two options. 1). They are so incompetent and uncreatuve they couldn’t design any way of nullifying those super in the new raid. So had to nerf them to create a challenge. 2) They are so lazy they redlined and old raid and to create challenge made slight changes and took away any semblance of what it felt like to be powerful. Let’s be clear and go at this at face value. Bungie literally stripped all power away for one of the two above reasons. We are essentially starship trooper infantry. Literally useless.

                • You seem to miss the point. Getting crappy weapons 98% of the time gets old very fast. This game try’s to be to many things.

                  • No reason why you can't have both, it comes down to mission design and how it plays with the rules of the game. Especially so when you have a self proclaimed sanbox shooter. The thing that is basically saying there are options, when in practice there aren't. That's the issue, the sandbox is shallow and underutilized all at once.
