A unique perspective on cores and infusing

If you don't read all of this, I don't blame you. But if you do, I think everyone will be able to relate, or at the very least, understand a bit better. To everybody, especially Bungie, attempting to justify a broken system, please hear my perspective. I have defended Destiny for the past what, 5 years? I'm a day 1 D1 veteran who has always shut down the haters. I support bungie through thick and thin. But I also have "no-lifed" this game and I hoarde. So I have every material I will ever need. I have over a thousand crucible tokens, vanguard tokens, raid tokens, etc to help my lagging titan level up whenever needed. I have thousands of gunsmith materials, hundreds of MW cores, and hundreds of mod components (not going to waste them now until infusion cost is changed). I am far from the typical person complaining because he didn't put in the time that another player did. I am also in a select group of players like me whose progress and stock of materials should not dictate the economy for average players. With this being said, I now have a unique perspective of the game. After many years of me hoping she would, my gf has finally begun Destiny. I now see the massive flaw with this game. She has been leveling quickly due to my guidance and tips (which would be substantially more difficult if she didn't have someone like me to help her maximize efficiency while still having fun.) But here's what sucks: I was so excited when she got Raiden Flux, for example. She loves Arcstrider. So for about half an hour at best, she loved the exotic perk from RF. Once it was outclassed by about 20 levels, she has never worn it since. How about Origin Story or Kibou? I was stoked once again since she loves auto rifles. 20 minutes later, she never used those two again. She is always maxed on glimmer and has a fair amount of planetary materials, so if infusion was legit cost, she could still be using some of these coveted items. But no. She has 1 masterwork core. Wtf is she gonna do? She doesn't complain much, cause we are having fun but she is missing out on using all the best legendaries and exotics the game has to offer. Instead of getting excited about a drop (which I know to be an exciting drop), she simply doesn't give a shit, because it might as well just be another blue item to her, soon to be outleveled by the next drop. Hello?! Isn't a huge part of Destiny being excited about drops? C'mon, I'm sure we can all agree here. This is a problem. To demand a new or casual player use blue gear mixed with mediocre purples from level 0 all the way to level 700 is a massive -blam!-ing problem and an astoundingly shortsighted position to take. She does not grind like me, so it will be a long time before she hits 700, and once she does, unless I get her to farm Spyder bounties instead of doing the fun stuff we enjoy, she still will not be able to infuse much, let alone ever masterwork a -blam!-ing gun. I hope my perspective hits home with somebody at Bungie. I am as much a veteran as you can get, and I have a rookie gf, and seeing how diminishing and different the experience is for her is truly a shame. Every exotic she gets is vaulted. What's the point? Most of them being mission rewards are underleveled anyways. Bungie, don't you want people to enjoy the legendaries and exotics in this game? Why waste the substantial efforts of the gear development team? Why cripple so much of the playerbase? This is absolutely absurd. I actually used to be one of the ones defending enhancement cores for infusion. I get it completely: level smart, use same gear pieces, use exotics, pull from collections, use the Brother Vance farm, dont infuse every 10 levels, etc, I've heard it all and I've done it all. Yet I see past all that now, having a unique perspective from both a no lifer's and a noob's point of view. Removing cores from infusion causes zero issues. Absolutely zero. There's no emotional feeling I get from infusing. That's a bullshit excuse from Bungie to make us play longer, to attempt to excuse the chores they want us to do. There was however, impactful meaning when actually Masterworking weapons and armor. You know, that thing people used to do before Masterwork Cores became Infusion Cores (might as well be the name now). Requiring them for infusion only causes headaches, less fun, more tedious tasks, and more people leaving the game. My gf and I have been having fun together in D2, but there's another D2 that just came out that doesn't seem to have one glaring major issue that the community constantly asks to be fixed.... maybe we will try that out soon. Because blues and shitty purples can only keep a player interested for so long. #removecoresfrominfusion Sincerely, A lifelong Destiny veteran and defender, who has finally seen the light, and I can only hope Bungie listens. PS Paul Tassi Forbes article says it perfectly. TL:DR The economy should not be dictated by people like me who have no-lifed this game and hoarded for years. We will always have more than everyone else; so be it. But allow everyone else to enjoy the game too, and not be crippled because of the hardcore players and their outrageous stock of materials. They are not hurting anyone by having a bunch of materials, but Bungie is hurting everyone else by dictating economy according to these select players with tons of everything. Edit: Thanks for the positive feedback and the likes. Hopefully this trends enough for others to see and to get Bungie's attention. Thanks to all the others who have made similar posts. We really are a great community, and Bungie has listened many times before.... so we will see. And no offense with the use of "no-lifer" title, lol. I have a nice life, ftr, as I'm sure many of you other hardcore gamers do too. You know what I mean though ;) Edit 2: New players still have to grind legendary shards. They start with 0 of those as well. Their infusion choices still would require thought. People constantly overlook this. I am not against grind, no. I am against stranglehold.

Great post that gets to the heart of the matter. I'm fairly sure someone at Bungie with power over this decision is sitting there smugly sure that they are right and the community is wrong, because they have a stat that says the average Cores held per active player is some number greater than zero... Remember the great weapons parts drought of D1 Y2? The community was telling them something was wrong and they refused to listen and actually nerfed the weapon parts economy further. A good while later in Y3 they reported they had fixed a bug which limited blue & green drops for long time players. Maybe they still haven't realised the connection...

    • Brilliant post. I no-life the frak outta Destiny. When my bro asked about returning for Forsaken & annual pass, I explained the grind/infusion/mats economy & the open ended nature of the Forsaken missions. He decided to jus leave it.. The casual player is crippled with the economy. Progression is dreadful for anyone other than the dedicated. I'll definitely be cutting the time in play over the next month or two. Solo PvE milestone & some core bountys, but that's it. I think they intended to slow progress, but they've essentially blown out the bridge to all but the hardest grinder's.

      • To anyone defending the system... if cores aren't a problem... delete your stockpile. Since cores are so easy to get, it won't be a problem -- for you. OP, it's great you see the issue, but it sucks your gf had to be the one to show it to you. When you look at things from a different perspective, your perspective changes.

        • EVERYONE THAT PLAYS DESTINY SHOULD READ YOUR POST Tassi said it best, up until now, I think you have put into words what most of us feel that have played destiny since day 1. I TOO have been a bungie defender. I no longer feel any loyalty or protective towards them. Why? One word, CORES and again, thank you for a wonderful post. hopefully this touches someone at bungie who cares.

        • There have been a lot of people saying this for a while. For some reason you need to paint a picture like this one for others to understand. I am another D1 day 1 with plenty of cores and materials. Good post. Cores are hindering gameplay, style and choice and are just not fun to try to get. They need to be removed from infusion, masterwork only. Or if they want to keep them have them drop from ALL activities as rewards.

Good post. I’m pretty much in the same boat. My wife and I played D1 together and I just got her to start D2. She got to the Foresaken expansion and dropped it. She couldn’t use the weapons she liked and with 1 core she is unable to keep the cosmetic armor that she liked. She’s gone now and moved on to playing Anthem with me.

          • I have 2 friends who were super keen to get into d2 and after a while they have sorta dropped off because they cant use any good guns so the sick loot has been underwhelming for them which is a problem because that was the thing i used to convince them to play im all about removing cores now

          • I cannot emphasise how much I agree with this. I have so many cool weapons sitting in my vault, because I simply don’t have enough resources to infuse these weapons to a usable level.

          • The Mod Component economy for new players is probably even worse than the Infusion Core economy

          • Not a very 'unique' perspective on the problem, but definitely one I can agree with, for the most-part. I'm also a guy who plays+ 5-6 hours a day usually, and I don't feel like the economy should be balanced for me, it should be balanced for those who play normally. Normally being probably twice per week for a couple hours.

          • Nice to see an actually intelligent argument. 100% well said. I don’t care if MW cores stay or go, but you’ve argued very well for the community changes. If only others didn’t put bungie off by screaming like banshees. *sigh*

            • Agreed, no to drugs and no to infusions requiring cores. Who ever thought this is meaningful was crazy. It's a looter shooter but you can't enjoy your loot. Sounds anthemish

                • In my opinion, Cores are an end game currency. Shards, planetary materials, glimmer all require playtime but aren't really endgame mats. Infusing is not an endgame activity. Otherwise, why should good legendaries and exotics even bother dropping until we are max level? 🤔 Masterworking... now, this is a legit endgame activity. For which the end game currency of cores should solely be used. But infusion? Gtfo of here with that.

                  • Your post made me think of the time I almost accidentally deleted my over 300 stack of cores (they were sitting right next to my fireteam medallions when I went to pop a medallion). If I suddenly lost the ability to infuse and use my favorite weapons and exotics and gear, it would devastate my enjoyment of the game. But that is exactly what casual players face while grinding levels. Ouch.

                  • I get that you want your girlfriend to stay interested in Destiny but all looter/shooters are built to be grindy. Planetary materials and glimmer should be the currency for infusions. People would probably complain about that too but it makes more sense.

                    • Really interesting post, that I can definitly agree on. However, I think the problem lies more within how the leveling system works within Destiny 2 instead of cores. If cores are removed, than Infusing is gonna be so much easier and you're gonna level through the game within a few days. If Cores stay currently, then they are still in high demand and scarce over such an important aspect of the game. In my honest opinion, I feel like Destiny 2's Light Leveling system should be reworked. It feels wayyy too off and just stupid. Like why do I care about hitting level 50? It feels more of a "You need to max out your level if you want to play" and it feels more like a chore than anything. Now, once I finally reach level 50, I have to wear all these mismatched armor pieces because they are better than my other ones, and if I want my other armor pieces to be better, then I must commit to a expensive cost. I wonder how this game would be different if Light didn't exist, and it was all just leveling up your character through XP. Then, we could have armor and weapons that were more dependent on the rolls it gets, and Bungie could expand on armor rolls and make them more impactful, creating a larger and more fun power-fantasy. Just an idea though.
