(Fanfic) Legend Untold Ch23 Pt5 “The Maze”

Chapter 23, The Maze Part 5 Guardian stepped forward, commanding the attention of all others present. Showing no sign of fear or even eagerness for what waited beyond the door, he reached the bottom of the steps with the five of us at his heels. Without us even needing to reach it, the two center triangles in the door began to glow a blueish white. Then the next largest triangle lit up, and then the last, and the sheet of metal slid open from a vertical slit through the middle. We passed through into yet another massive cavern that honestly didn’t seem like it should fit within the structure that we had entered. The ground we walked on was a platform that stretched out from the wall behind us, growing narrower the further out it went until it ended in a point. To the sides and beyond the outcropping I could see only the endless abyss of the Vault, and a gap in the center with a smaller, floating platform in it revealed the same. Short spires and blocks of Vex design made the small space diverse enough, along with several Vex gates placed around, but they all paled in comparison to what lay at the far tip of the platform. Massive bars of glass created a triangular frame that managed to fill most of the wide space between the walls to either side before they grew even further apart. The countless crystalline bars and fragments twinkled under the glow provided by several bright white lights placed across the area by the Vex, and some even spun in the air, suspended near the main body of the structure but unattached. My mind instantly associated this with the throne of shattered glass I had seen in my visions, and for an instant I swore I could see moving forms and hear whispered sounds from within the glass. That instant passed when I saw the lights. The color red was almost nonexistent here, replaced by blue and gold that had made their presence less noticeable. The bodies attached to these cold eyes were as still as the stone and metal around them, and they looked unlike any Vex I had ever seen. Vex of dark brown metal that looked to be dulled and worn by years of endurance lined the ridge and filled the elevated area to our right side, golden eyes staring out of heads fitted with rings and half-rings rather than the fanning dishes of the Vex we normally fought with. On the left side, Vex with white shells that were semitranslucent and tinged with blue stood in small groups; golden decals highlighted their already luminous appearance, and blue vertical bars for eyes as well as sleek curves and gaps within the usual fan-framed head gave them a distinguishably different impression from any of the other Vex. Dead ahead of us, staring at the wall above our heads, a single Hydra hovered above the ground, bearing the dark bronze chassis of the Vex I had faced in the Black Garden, but with four large fins extending upwards from its hull that gave it a fierce look of importance. It had the only red eye in the room, making it seem more malicious than the rest. They were no more than rumors amongst the Tower archives, but I was certain that these Vex were the Sol Imminent and Sol Primeval, subtypes supposedly related to the Sol Divisive but hardly ever seen. The Sol Primeval would be the white ones, also known as the Precursors and theorized to be from some distant past. Sol Imminent would be the dark, worn ones, which were more commonly called Descendants; all we knew about these ones was that their bodies were ancient, and the theory was that they came from a future where the Vex were unopposed. The fact that their classifications translated to Primeval and Imminent was proof enough when dealing with the Vex. The six of us had all stopped lined up just inside the door, watching the Vex warily. They didn’t move, but their presence alone seemed to fill the space with a cold air of calculation and intent. “Those are some weird lookin’ Vex,” Drew’s voice suddenly broke the tense atmosphere. Dozens of gold and blue eyes turned on us simultaneously, as well as the single red eye of the Hydra. A familiar chill rode up my spine, and I was reminded of all the other times the Vex had given me the creeps. “Mother fluffer,” Hunter shuddered visibly, “I hate it when they do that.” It was easy to tell by the way everyone’s weapons were raised that all present felt the same. A swarm of angry red lights came to life as Vex weapons were aimed at us, accompanied by several high-pitched hums. “Snipers!” I warned, and everyone bolted just in time to avoid a volley of Line Rifle charges that zipped through the air at us from the Hobgoblins amongst both Vex subtypes. Everyone except Drew, who earned himself a burn on his shoulder and a hole through his calf before he managed to get moving. He was fine, though, just a little mad. Sierra, Hunter, and I started firing back at the Hobgoblins while the others made their way around the left side to engage the Vex. Sierra managed to nail one in the gut, making the Vex burst apart, but Hunter and I were a bit off, each of our first shots only hitting the chests of the snipers. The two Hobgoblins were knocked back by the impact of the rounds, but their chassis appeared relatively undamaged. Luckily, their defensive reflex still triggered and the two froze themselves in stasis fields, allowing Hunter and I to move on to more pressing threats. Our next shots hit home. And soon the three of us had eliminated most of the snipers lining the ridges and were climbing up the left side after the others. Guardian was at the head, slowly wearing down rows of Precursor Goblins while Warlock kept the Descendants closer to the center at bay. Drew was in the mix of things, as usual, although even he seemed to be having trouble rending limbs from these Vex. A fresh swarm of Goblins had teleported into the battle and were reinforcing both sides of the platform. They were from our time; their golden coloring and white stripes marking them as the Hezen Protective subtype that defended all the important projects the Vex undertook on Venus. I peppered a few Goblins with my auto rifle, managing to take them out with concentrated damage to the stomachs, but when it came time to reload, a Precursor Goblin that had been standing further away materialized in front of me in a cloud of fluttering blue lights. My fist slammed up into its chest, charged with Light and dragging the Goblin up off of the ground. But when I brought my arm back, the Goblin kept its feet under it and landed perfectly. My hand slipped away from its armor to reveal warped and dented, but unbroken, white metal. The nodes in its hand were already glowing with violet light as it prepared to return the favor, but I spread my fingers and slammed my palm into it before I could find out if its strength had risen to match its endurance. Void Light poured out of my hand and enveloped the Vex, disintegrating it instantly. I pondered the power of the Vex here as I reloaded and then shot down a couple more Vex. Either these were superior models, or they were twisting reality inside the Vault to their favor. Neither would be surprising. A Precursor Hobgoblin teleported from a lower part of the platform to where I was so it could see its targets. Planting my left foot, I kicked straight out with my right leg and launched the Hobgoblin over the edge. Peering down, I watched it fall helplessly into the dark, its yellow eye still focused dead on me. “Can the Vex teleport while in the air?” I asked aloud. “Now’s not the time, Will,” Rush dismissed. “I think it’s an appropriate time considering that I don’t want that Vex coming back,” I replied curtly, vaporizing a pair of Goblins with my fusion rifle. “Will,” Sierra spoke up warningly. She and Guardian were clearing the right side now, while Hunter picked off the last Hobgoblin and Warlock started probing at the Hydra. My side was clear, so I let myself relax and think for a moment. “And that glass there,” I ignored them, “Is that silicon?” “Silly what?” Drew questioned from several feet away, looking up from the Vex he had been trying to pull his fist out of. “Silicon glass can be used to transmit information, and the Vex usually make everything out of the same materials that they’re composed of,” I described to everyone, “So, if that’s true, the Vex radiolaria may be silicon-based, which isn’t unheard of.” “Why the heck does any of that matter?!” Sierra exclaimed. “No no, I’m interested now,” John quieted her, earning a frustrated growl. “Well, it would be a start to explain some of their intelligence network,” I answered her rhetorical question, “And a basic understanding of any creature is required to begin to understand their strengths and weaknesses.” “Know your enemy,” Warlock agreed. “But I don’t need to know about glass and intel to break things,” Drew pointed out, motioning to the dead Vex around him. “Drew, that’s-“ I began, but found myself unable to finish because a burning projectile slammed into my back, detonating and launching me straight into Drew, who hardly even stumbled as I bounced off of him and dropped to the floor in a steaming mess.
