Uldren and the Dare

[Potential spoilers ahead, do the Oracle Offering first] (Finally, something to talk about) So, Uldren is back as a guardian. Most people saw the cutscene when it was leaked, so this isn’t really big news. Now that it’s officially out, I can talk about it. Many people are giving their thoughts right now, emotions are rising. I want to summarize everything about this incident and dissect possible effects on the future. ________________________________________ Ok first, let’s address the obvious: “Uldren” isn’t Uldren anymore. No memories. He’s a blank slate, brought into a world he doesn’t understand. So maybe chill and don’t shoot him at first sight. So, new guardian, not Uldren? Nice, no more asshole Awoken prince. Weeeell, not entirely. Remember where he got revived? The Dreaming City. He’s likely to run into other guardians or Awoken Corsairs. They will recognize him, telling him who he is or even bringing him to Petra. If Uldren doesn’t escape the City unseen, it’s likely he will be confronted with his former self very soon. What that would do to him, finding out he’s a prince and was murdered for betrayal to his people, is almost impossible to foresee. I’m not going to make a guess since there is so much that could happen. Let’s just ignore the previous part for a second. Let’s say Ex-Uldren makes it to the City without being discovered. He’s a new guardian so his ghost, presumably Pulled Pork, will try to take him there. He’ll definitely be recognized there. The Vanguard will know he’s not the old Uldren anymore. They should have to accept him as a new recruit, no matter his previous life. But that will prove difficult. He killed Cayde after all, and we guardians didn’t take that too lightly. If they actually make him a proper guardian, he’ll be an outcast. If they don’t, he’ll have to leave the city and become either a Risen or something completely different. Sooo many possibilities. Either way, it will shake up the entire guardian world. There’s one more thing: Let’s say he gets to be a guardian, a Hunter to be precise. There might be some monumental implications: Remember the story mission where you went through Cayde’s hidden stashes on Titan. Every stash contained a message for people Cayde new, in the case they would kill him. Yeah, kinda strange. He left one message for any Hunter that might kill him. In the message he states that any Hunter that kills him, will get his position as Hunter Vanguard. Uldren killed Cayde. Now, many people believed that Guardian Uldren has to take Cayde’s place as Hunter Vanguard. If we only follow the logic presented in the message, that makes sense. But there are some...problems: 1. We’re not sure if the message is actually describing Cayde’s Dare. The Dare is usually something public. Moreover, Cayde never said that it’s a Dare. It might as well have been one of his jokes. 2. The Dare, historically, has to be agreed on by the Vanguard and the participants. 3. Uldren wasn’t a Hunter when he killed Cayde. Maybe he won’t even be a Hunter after the resurrection, but that’s unlikely. 4. He’s too inexperienced as a guardian. I’m not saying it’s impossible that Uldren becomes Hunter Vanguard. There are a lot of arguments for and against this theory. Many variables will determine the fate of this new guardian, cursed by his previous life. ______________________________________________ I’m personally very happy they dared to make this move. Of course, I don’t like Uldren. This is not about that. There is so much that can happen now. So many new possibilities for the story and characters. The emotions, reactions and events this could cause are uncountable. This will be a major event in Destiny storytelling. Destiny needs controversial events like this to give the characters room and time to develop. This needed to happen. ________________________________________________ I hope you enjoyed my take on this whole...thing. I’m happy I could make actual lore content again. I’ve been looking for exciting topics for a while now.

  • If he is to be vanguard which I do not favor (yes I like this plot twist) I found the perfect place for him to perch in the tower. Right behind Saladin inside the fire pit let him roast

I never liked him (not from way back in D1).... he killed my favorite character and I don't want him around! Personally I believe this will ruin the game if he comes back. I want nothing to do with him other than maybe putting a bullet in his ghost and then another between his eyes. Spit on his dead (forever) body and move on!

  • Mate you've put way more thought into all this than Bungie have or will. He'll just slot into the vanguard and no more will be said on the matter, I bet you.

    • I think this will be the perfect set up for destiny 3. We can only learn of his progress to the city every 3 weeks and without his own ship it could take him a long time to get to the city. I think he will get to the city expect to become a guardian as the ghost is telling him stories about guardians getting his hopes up and they’ll turn him away and he will get angry and create his own guardian faction that opposes the vanguard. They’ll be a faction that wants to help humanity but thinks the vanguard is corrupt setting up for the leaked D3 pvpve content. Guardians will be able to choose whether to go with uldren and agree the vanguard is on a downhill spiral and try to create a better faction to help humanity or you could choose to stay loyal to the vanguard. You’ll be exploring the wild trying to help your faction and if you run into fallen boom boom kill the fallen and if you run into someone from an opposing faction in the wild boom boom kill the opposing guardian. I just think this would set up D3 perfectly but maybe this is just wishful thinking

    • Zavala will probably be fine with Uldren’s return, but I’m not sure about Ikora. Despite being the Warlock Vanguard, we’ve seen how irrational she can be when she gets mad. We saw what she wanted to do when she first found out about Cayde’s death. Petra won’t exactly be pleased by Uldren’s return either. Guardian Uldren will tear Guardians apart from the inside just by existing. I’m more concerned for the City and the Awoken.

    • I feel like Uldren won't make it to the city the way you're thinking. Mara was absent from her throne world. I'm certain she was the first to confront her resurrected brother. She may have the Queen's Wrath, but her brother is just as lethal and very resourceful. She would now control a seemingly immortal being that'd do her bidding. She has been planning and arming herself this entire time. I feel like she's thinking that Uldren will now be one of the biggest weapons she has at her disposal. And a side note; that Mara x Shaxx thing? Another ploy. What better way to get one of the most powerful Guardians to respond to you? Seduction. The third DLC shows a redjack. There's a good chance we could see the end result between them in that season, if not sooner. Or, it really could be genuine and she's looking for a King? I still see deceit and manipulation coming from this. Poor Shaxx. She's playing a much bigger game, here.

      • I would really like them to do more live in game stuff per week. For instance imagine if the first time we go to the tower to see Zavala next reset he is there talking to Uldren. Explaining his new duties. Then Uldren walks away and Zavala explains somberly that we must let him be a guardian as he is a new person. Regardless of our feelings about him.

      • I can't see him being the leader for the Hunters. He is still new and requires the respect of his fellow guardians and there is no way any of the guardians will want to work with him, even if he is a clean slate now.

        • Uldren cant be vanguard straight away he’s got a lot of catching up to do.... he’s currently using white and green weapons, he hasn’t picked up his sparrow yet and can’t even afford the first expansion. Maybe he will start off helping cleaning around to tower until he’s saved enough money to visit the lighthouse on mercury before helping with the warmind on mars. Level 650 is a long way off for him....Forsaken is his long time goal but the loser doesn’t even have a exotic yet!

          • Its a nice twist. As far as experience goes. It was only a few weeks and a few freshly minted guardians defeated a Vex construct capable of rewriting space time, a scant month later we traveled to an Ascendent realm and slew its God with its own sword and then about a year later after he obliterated an empire imbued with unending tributes based on a sword logic he willed into existence making him this universes Apex Predator we kicked his butt too. So experience...meh. Im more interested in it being a story with weight and emotional resonance i suspend disbelief enough to get through endless matches where a funny little dude with jade pendants has caged taken and manufactured a mini ascendent realm to run a game to test and possibly corrupt guardians. So im good

          • If be happy if we had factions afterwards. Like Zavala wanted to let in Uldren, this making Ikora split off from the others, making a new faction that wants to hunt down Uldren again and kill him + pulled pork . Petra still enraged, rallies to become the new hunter vanguard and represent the awoken, only to be denied because she would place her own priorities ahead of the towers. Etc etc. We could even get efrideet in the equation, or possibly that one faction we learned about towards the end of D1(I forgot the name). Maybe fwc, dead orbit, and new monarchy. I could see dead orbit siding with Petra seeing the chance to leave earth, new monarchy would join Zavala as both are there for the good of the tower according to their ideals, and fwc joined allies with Ikora wanting to get rid of Uldren and possibly other enemies of the cult, as well as getting revenge for a fellow exo. Idk, probably not but it would be really cool to choose different sides and perspectives. I’d go with Ikora because I hate Uldren and I hate Zavala, and I think Ikora would be the better leader of the vanguard.

          • But the problem is really this, he's been taken to the outskirts of the cosmodrome, now he's gotta go through D1, battle Atheon, Crota, face a strangely familiar asshole on the reef, battle skolas, then siva, hopefully he gets Gjally and fatebringer. Only if after all that, if he decides to give Bungie more of his hard earned glimmer, will he then have to go through Gary, Pantiesoff, some weird tapeworm. And then, only then.. He can watch that strangely familiar reef dude kill his friend Cayde6...and set out yo kill him.

                • For it not being his dare why do you think no one has taken the position no one lost the dare therefore no one will take the position. Yes he wasn't a guardian and as well will probably not want it but will accept it do to the dare was fulfilled with him and he will try to redeem himself from his past. We will be the ones to help him with that. Makes for a "good story" redemption arc and the one to seek vengeance is the first to get him a chance and help him leave his life he doesn't remember behind. As for the influence to the tower idk it's very likely he will be seen. Hell he is still wearing the scales from what I believe are from riven and they transcend death

                    • I dont see why he'd be treated as an outcast, we're guardians we know how this works. The person whos risen isnt the same person who died, heck our character couldve been a mass murderer in our previous life and we wouldn't know. With the Vanguard position, Uldren is inexperienced but i think Zavala might do it as a formality. He says at the end of the campagin that Uldrens death will have repercussions some day, so maybe he does it as a way of avoiding any potential backlash

                        • Caede started out as a good guy, but the more you learn from lorecards, the more it is clear that before being a guardian, he was a Clovis Bray killing machine. Before that human Caede is portrayed as a badguy. Uldren started out as a badguy, but the lorecards paint his past in a far more positive light, plus Uldren can defer part of the blame to Riven. In a sense, Uldren and Caede are the same: Human Caede good -> Exo Caede Evil -> Guardian Caede Redemption and Death Early Uldren good -> Destiny Plot Uldren bad -> Guardian Uldren now live The only difference being that the player can say Caede past existence as a killer is water under the bridge, while Uldren's villainy was experienced first hand. Which brings us to Uldren being in a position where he has hell to pay and lore cards suggest he is the man for the job. In true Manga and Comic tradition, Uldren will have to redeem himself and just when you like him, that is when he really dies for shock value, completing his character arc. For the same reason you want the Callus situation to get worse, revive Ghaul and watch the glory of him fighting the Pyramid ships. Remember, we also need a new speaker and probably all reinforcements Cabal and Fallen can send to Earth and make a stand.
