<Last night someone mentioned the Aphelion. I've heard the name in Destiny before but I never thought about what it was... until I read Bamberga and the transcripts for the Gardens of Esila Techuen statues.
The Techeuns you see here died while they were in trance together. Sometimes when you are in communion you cannot see what is coming close, like the Aphelion. Their last words were these "First it shimmered… then it crawled… then it screamed."

These three Techeuns were victim to the Aphelion. I pray you never see it my friend, because no matter what gods you have killed, you will not survive it.

We Techeuns are taught absolute obedience to our Queen. We have no desires but what our Queen desires, we have no fears but what our Queen fears. Good traits. But weaknesses against certain enemies. Like the Taken. Like the Aphelion.
Those were transcripts borrowed from Ishtar Collective. They are some of the basis of the theory I will present.
What do we know about the Aphelion? It's very powerful. Capable of sneaking up on Techuens and even wiping out a station of 300 Awoken. Currently the only survivor of an attack by the Aphelion was Sjur Eido, who died years later during the Reef Wars with a strange coin on her body. Currently, that's not important, but it shows the Aphelion aren't infallible.
The Aphelion is also described in the tab Bamberga.
INFORMATION RECEIVED APR 09-18T02:29:45+00:00 FROM PALADIN NOLG, CONSIDERED SOBER, DEPENDABLE, NOT OF FANTASY. NOLG REPORTED "A GLOWING CREATURE" ON EXT OF HIS SHIP "RETRIBUTION" MOMENTS BEFORE ROUTINE NLS JUMP.
"RETRIBUTION" FDR SHOWED RAD SPIKE (5 SIGMA) ON TEPC, CPDS, AND RAM. CPD SHOWED NO EFFECT. ON RECOMMENDATION OF K WADJ, NOLG WAS QUARANTINED UNDER TECHEUN SUPERVISION FOR 1 MONTH. "RETRIBUTION" DECOMMISSIONED, SET ADRIFT BEYOND REEF.
The Aphelion glows. It fits in with transcript 2/4, or the first quoted thing on this page. The Aphelion shimmers and apparently produces a bit of radiation.
T-1: PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN. ALL STATIONS, ALL STATIONS, ALL STATIONS. THIS IS RSS AMESTRIS. WE HAVE A POSSIBLE SKYSHOCK EVENT IN PROGRESS. REQUESTING IMMEDIATE VIDCOM WITH ANY AVAILABLE TECHEUN. [STATIC FOLLOWS]
Transmission one of the second Aphelion instance. This is where things start to add up. Skyshock event...
We've heard this term before. Rasputin uses it to describe the opening moments of the Collapse, when the Darkness started blowing through colonies. Asher Mir uses it to describe the mass Taken movement to Io after the Cabal released it from inside the planet.
T-3-A: I'VE GOT IT, HANG ON. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO… WHAT'S THE CHANNEL?
T-3-B: THEY'RE SCREAMING! LISTEN, THEY'RE ALL SCREAMING!
T-3-A: BE CALM! HELP ME! WHAT'S THE CHANNEL?
T-3-B: IT'S THE CORE, IT'S THE CORE, THIS IS THE STALKING CORE!
T-3-A: SHUT UP! WHAT'S THE CHANNEL!
T-3-B: OH NO, OH PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE [STATIC FOLLOWS]
I... cannot really make this out but I thought it was important. Screaming is related to the Aphelion, whether it's the thing screaming or everything it kills moments before death. I don't know what the stalking core is.
T-5: MAYDAY, MAYDAY! THIS IS VEN ASAR ON THE RSS AMESTRIS. WE ARE 300 SOULS ABOARD. SOMETHING IS HAPPENING, EVERYTHING IS BLUE, SOMETHING IS HERE [STATIC FOLLOWS]
This isn't the first time in Forsaken we've seen blue. I don't mean simply the color blue, but odd events or things that are blue. I mean blue space magic things.
The light seemed to dance in blue over the horizon of Unknown Space, but all else was black.
This is from the tab Unknown Space in the book Most Loyal. In this tab, Variks was almost Taken.
The second instance of blue space magic if we ignore the Taken* is the entire Ascendant Plane as seen in D2. The entire place has a blue hue over it. Funnily enough, the Ascendant Plane has been listed above Unknown Space a couple times, namely in the Corrupted Strike.
Aphelion is a thing that exists, but the definition is quite different from what is described. Aphelion is the point in which a planet in its orbit is the furthest from the sun.
Alright, so you know how I compared Skyshock events and marked up the Taken? The Taken are blue (sometimes blue-green) in color. That's it. That's my loose connection besides being mentioned right next to the Aphelion.
But skyshock events... the two so far have been about entities directly related to the Darkness, whether it was corrupted by or being present.
What about the use of ([number] sigma) in the first Aphelion instance in Bamberga? I've seen that used twice more as well. Once (nine sigma) in Ghost Fragment: Darkness and another (3 sigma) in a Truth to Power lore tab that confirms Oryx's death. Again, Darkness-related things.
So, what is the Aphelion? I believe it is a single entity of immense strength related heavily to the Darkness.
Thoughts?>

1 RespuestaI think they are the creators and first wielders of the Taken, because Orix didn't invent the Taken, he just learned how to take
-
If we are to believe some recent leaks made regarding d3. These leaks seme plausible and are very interesting. Then the aphelion are one of two races representing the darkness itself, the other are the veil.
-
They might actually be the Darkness itself as described in the lore tabs you mentioned, they irradiate with blue-like light just like the Taken, also like the Pyramid ships as seen on concept art.

3 RespuestasI... hadn’t yet come across any references to aphelion in my travels, yet... at least none that I’ve taken notice of. So I have nothing meaningful to contribute other than: This post is awesome! And let’s hand it to Bungie for the slow tease... Can’t wait to learn more!

When I think of the Aphelion, it seems to me like it acts more like a banshee than anything else. Banshee as in a ghost or spirit (not the exo or the covenant vehicle). The lack of evidence of an attack, yet no survivors on the ship with 300 people lends to the idea that the Aphelion does not have physical form. Also, shuro chi says that we cannot kill the Aphelion, no matter how many gods we have slain, which is almost a nonsense statement. When you have killed gods, beings of such power to change reality at will, you should be able to kill anything, right? Not necessarily because every god we have killed has some sort of physical body that we can shoot, even in throne worlds. If the Aphelion is similar to a banshee, then we wouldn't be able to kill it because it has no physical body.

Editado por ODSTrooper: 10/30/2018 2:26:52 AMAll very interesting, I hadn't even given thought to any of this really before. In the Dreaming city there's the lost called Aphelion's Rest if you recall as well.

Editado por CIKiller: 10/30/2018 2:21:18 AMWhat if it's one of the creatures those Tetrahedron ships will undoubtedly be full of?

3 RespuestasMmm, I would like to think of it as a sort of right-hand to IT, if Aphelion is an entity. Considering that it kind of snuck up to 3 Techeuns and a ship with 300 Awoken, perhaps the “shimmering” is a sort of sign it is coming. Sort of like a teleport. Also the fact it was mentioned alongside the Taken kind of proves it has to do with the Darkness. The “crawling” could also mean it either cannot move any other way, or that the Aphelion is a sort of massive, destructive wave of multiple beings. It could also explain an incredibly loud scream, after all it never specified it being a specific single thing.

7 RespuestasAphelion is most likely the eldest Harbinger. Possibly Taken by Oryx when he entered the Dreaming City and took Riven, or Taken by Quria.
-
12 RespuestasI would say it being a creature of darkness. Not like the worm gods.or the taken. Not like the beings from the ice world. This makes me think the darkness is not only a being but a place of power. Where creatures like this come from.

Slowly but sure we're being introduced to Agents of The Darkness and others who drift between. We're going to get rocked when The Formless/Pyramids arrive.

1 RespuestaEditado por H1vac: 10/28/2018 6:05:39 PMAphelion: the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. Could mean person furthest from the Light. So yeah I agree. Edit: Riven swallowed Illyn and two other Techeuns: Portia, and Nascia. Your third quote alludes to this: https://www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/illyn?highlight=Illyn . The Ahamkara are allied to the darkness but do not conform to its laws. There are beings of immense power. And were murdered.

1 RespuestaThe Traveler is an agent of the Light, the Worms are an agent of the dark. The guardians were gifted light by the Traveler, and the Hive were gifted worms by the 5 Worms. The ghosts were made by pure light, the taken made by pure Dark. The light had a speaker, but we didn't think the Darkness had one, but they might.
Aphelion, Speaker of the Dark, Terror of Light.
3 RespuestasEditado por Avenus: 10/29/2018 12:36:14 AMIsn't there a location called Aphelion's Rest?

2 RespuestasI really want to see these Aphelion expanded on more in the lore. Are they possibly the creatures the Drifter encountered on his expedition during the Red War? There’s no doubt it’s related to the Darkness somehow, considering the fact that the Reef is where the Light and Dark clashed. Could be why the only known examples of them we have related to the Drifter, a guy who’s gone far beyond what we’ve explored, and the Awoken, who sit directly on that boundary.
-
Maybe, just maybe, I am just speculating here so maybe, just maybe the Aphelion has something to do with the Triangle or whatever shape you wanna call them ships. I could be wrong but maybe, just maybe I'm not.
-
1 RespuestaThe definition you use in regards to a planet’s orbit makes some sense put into the context that it is something very far from the light.
-
1 RespuestaTaken Xenomorph. That would be terrifying.
-
Things seem to point to the Aphelion being a single entity, either born of Darkness or fallen to Darkness. The Traveler has/had its own agents and emissaries, like the Leviathan, so maybe the Aphelion fills a similar role, as an agent or emissary of the Deep. Another possibility could be that the Aphelion is a corrupted being that once served the Light, but has now fallen to the Deep, much like Dredgen Yor. The Aphelion`s Rest lost sector seems to indicate that whatever the Aphelion is/was, it is either imprisoned or entombed somewhere within the Dreaming City, much like Riven. Maybe it`s a new Raid Lair boss?
-
4 RespuestasAny possibility it is a being of Light? It never comes after us, but it does attack the Awoken. Perhaps it goes after anything Dark? It sounds horrifying by description but we still don't really know. The Lost Sector implies that we may come close to it but never encounter it.
-
9 RespuestasNice write up, as always. Given the fact about an aphelion being when a planet is furthest from the sun, and a Penumbra to do with shadow and the dark doritos slowly but menacingly flying out way, I'd say the Aphelions in this case are agents of the darkness. What happened when the 50+ moons of fundment were in a zyzergy?
-
Any chance the Drifter is hauling an Aphelion around in his Derelict? We know whatever he has is a big black mass that nobody’s ever encountered before... but maybe the truth is that nobody has record of anything like it because nobody has ever survived to talk about it. I realize that Sjur Eido survived, but whatever she shared with the Awoken, and whatever the Awoken seem to know, doesn’t seem to have been communicated to the Vanguard.
-
3 RespuestasThe dead ghost Dead Orbit has an interesting perspective on the aphelion.

Editado por CommonBlueberry: 10/29/2018 1:45:54 AMBlue, screeming, crawling? It is a giant taken screeb confirmed.

I like this theory and have had similar thoughts. The Aphelion sounds like a force or a being that is heavily related to the Darkness, if not the Darkness itself.
