How was State of Decay?

State of Decay 2 is coming up, and though I’m interest in it, I never played SoD 1. So I’ve read about it and heard the general consensus is that it’s fun but suffers from some bugs and quality of life issues. So I want to hear what people here think about the first game, and whether they think it’s a “must play”, an average game, or terrible. And, of course, what are your expectations for the upcoming sequel? Do you think it will give a much-needed boost to Xbox's reputation, or will it fail to impress like Sea of Thieves? What do you all think about how they plan to implement 4-player co-op?

  • First things first: like I said on a YouTube video that said state of decay 2 “needs to be a success for Xbox”, it’s not happening. Unless the game sells 10+ millions Xbox isn’t getting much out of it to bolster their power/influence. The first is estimated at around 2.5-3 million in sales, hardly something that will benefit the Xbox in a major way. The difference between the first and second so far is SoD2 has the bigger budget this time so bigger sales should be expected, plus you have word of mouth on the first game, even then I’d count on maybe 2-4 million copies to sell over it’s time as it simply isn’t a big IP to garner attention. They really need to hammer down on marketing to get high numbers and I don’t think undead labs is interested, they’re more content on being a niche which is fine by me and it’s probably better that way. So ultimately people shouldn’t have the expectations that this game will bolster Xbox in a considerable way as it doesn’t have the power to do so. As for my experience on the first game: it WILL get repetitive but that’s part of gaming. There will be a lot of back and forth on scavenging resources and bringing them back to base. The game is also live even If you’re offline, so don’t be surprised to see resources drained of you haven’t played in days barring you didn’t already stockpile on things. The big intrigue to it is survival, ammo is limited so only use it wisely (being attacked by hordes? Go ape shit, character about to die? Go ape shit) and stick to melee weapons as much as possible to avoid alerting zombies (the devs have said sound will play a bigger role in the sequel as well so emphasis on what I said). There’s also certain mission esq things to do and generally they’re only available for x amount of time. Do you drive all the way across the map go help a survivor and get ammo in return? Or do you stick to your base region collecting whatever you find? How about helping another group pack up to move to your base? At some point the game would make you pick and choose as you can’t do everything. Hopefully SoD2 makes this a bigger thing as I definitely think it can be improved on. There’s some differences I’ve noticed between the 2: •SoD2 now lets you repair vehicles, as a result there will be less vehicles over all. In the first you still had a limited # of vehicles as they didn’t respawn once destroyed so you had to take care of them. •plague zombies are making an entrance. I’m not sure if they only infect you if they hit you or your survivors just need to be near them, but it adds to the need of medical supplies, plus it makes melee digging even more dangerous even though melee will be the safest way to skirt zombies. Personally I’m hoping they add a cross bow/bow to be silent but still keeping distance vs plague zombies. •the special encounter zombies are more dangerous by a mile since undead labs “buffed” them. Multiplayer 👍 THE most asked for thing is finally here and I can’t wait. If I recall the games difficulty spikes up if you team with players. I could go on, I LOVED the first and no doubt I’ll love the second. Is it great to recommend to people? I can’t say so just because I myself love it, while the sequel has the new engine and bigger budget, improvements are expected but would it be a game for everyone? I don’t really think so and I can already see that based off YouTube comments on trailers and reveals. Some are saying the looks are still ps2 graphics lol, it’ll just be a rehash if the first and get boring after the first 5 hours, ect ect. I think I’d only recommend it if one has patience, is tolerant of bugs and simply loves survival games. I don’t think it’d be accessible to everyone which is another reason why I doubt it’ll help Xbox cause if it isn’t accessible then you’re not going to sell a lot. We’ll see, I’d love to see the sequel grow but at the same time not to much where undead and the IP change so much based off their popularity and such. Popularity is what drives devs to get away from what made them good only to then change things to pull in even more people.

    • Honestly, co-op was exactly what it needed. If it's a similar game but with co-op it could be great.

    • It was a lot of fun, and I played a crap ton before I got stupid and my best couple survivors died, and that left me with a bunch of survivors with the strength and survivability of wet paper.

    • I really enjoyed the first one. Had a ton of fun building up my own team of elite survivors and home base. The only problem I had was that there wasn't any multiplayer so it got a little boring. I would highly recommend it though if your into zombie survival games though.
