Do seasons need to exist?

Yes, they add incentive to collect items and make loot more unique over time.

34

No, they add no value whatsoever to loot and give me no incentive to play.

Don't care either way.

So Bungie plans to lock off certain weapons, gear, and other items in different seasons and introduce new ones. Old news I know. Personally, I feel that a lot of the loot is bland, uninspired, and boils down to fashion or what is the least useless weapon. With that in mind, does that act of locking away things make these more special? Is there anything really unique in the game where making it exclusive adds value and gives you incentive to collect everything in each season. Does this system even belong in Destiny 2?

  • Addition by subtraction is not a good thing in gaming. Why not just ADD more gear, leave the existing, and before you know it there is a ton of different loot to chase. What a novel idea huh?

    • I prefer the RPG sort of approach to seasons... focused on actual seasonal weather, running seasonal events with gear that can only be obtained during those events. Mostly cosmetic in nature, though they may be functionally equivalent items to normally available items but offer that unique cosmetic feature (like spring/summer yakuta in a fantasy RPG). Don't much like dropping stuff simply because the game moved to a new chapter. The vanilla content is still there for those starting... so long as that level gear is still available and relevant for that content, it doesn't bother me. Just don't outright deny access simply because we are now in a newer season/chapter.

    • Let me explain why they are doing seasons. They had so little time in actual production, they are giving them selves time to finish the actual game by releasing it in stages as "Seasons". It's why they're planning a balancing with some revisions to the mod system in season 2... Because it was intended to be part of the original game... Then they got to release date and had to squat and push out what they had fully digested, and have been clinching their cheeks ever since while they work their way through the rest of the game... Saying it's "seasons" is an excuse for hiding the fact they released a game that they didn't have half enough time to finish developing.

      • It will add uniqueness in loadouts over time. Especially if all the prior season's weapons and armors go away. So, maybe Destiny doesn't create a better energy AR than Uriels, you'll have some people running Uriels and others running whatever the best of season 2's choices are. Meanwhile maybe there's a season 2 Scout that's even better than the Mannanana. Now if all of the stuff carries forward season to season, it's kind of pointless as whatever they add in Season 2 will have to be better than what's already in Season 1. Obviously this will exist for players who play season to season but I'm speaking more in terms of people who come into the game at different points. Like the people who show up from getting the game for Christmas, as an example.

      • Time-gating and Seasons impose limits on play that some players struggle with imposing on themselves. The people complaining about it are the same people who would power level through the game, only use the game's "best" weapons.... ...and then complain about there not being enough to do. Even if---especially if-- they had access to all of the loot at once.

      • At first glance I was thinking you were meaning should we have gear specific for the seasons and I was like oh hell yes we should, winter time have heavier gear and summer lighter gear and spring and fall would be a form of medium gear. Then I read the full post and was like oh no let me change my vote lol

        • Having seasons is a nice idea, but the gear offered needs to be something worth coming back for. With their staunch refusal to separate PvP and PvE, we won't really see any worthy gear any time soon.
Do seasons need to exist?
Depends. The length of each season is a big factor... Take Iron Banner... I suffered through that in the hopes of getting the Titan helmet. It was the only thing I wanted. After a lot of rank ups, I never did get that helmet. Got many duplicates of pretty much everything else, including all of the rest of the armor. The problem for me is: If the season ends too soon, I will never get that helmet to match the rest of the gear.

          • I don’t mind but there should be kiosk so I don’t have to clutter up my vault. If I’ve acquired it then let me repurchase at my whim. It’d add more of a collection aspect to the game. Ditto for shaders, then it wouldn’t be as big of a deal for them to be consumables.

          • Each season has a unique theme which have unique armour sets and with the start of each season a sandbox update occurs which makes the times of nerfs and buffs more predictable

          • I understand it, but think it’s stupid. As the stuff isn’t truly vital to the game, not getting something is not a big deal, but what I would have done was allow the possibility of getting every possible seasonal thing by playing for the 9 potential weekly engrams (3 per character at the enhanced rate) and that once you have everything, you simply are given random shaders past that. And if you didn’t get everything, you could choose the season you wanted within the current game year. Ultimately, I just don’t think that the possibility of elitism is possible with ships and shaders and sparrows and emotes. What the hell am I supposed to do if I wanted an emote that isn’t around anymore? If it’s not even possible, I’d just be, well, ok, life moves on. Again, there are better ways of doing this.

Considering we haven't even been through 1 whole season, or seen what seasons have to offer completely, its a little bit too soon to be critical of it, in my opinion. That being said, I think its great. Exclusivity is a big selling point for some people, and expanding the loot table is a good way to generate interest in returning to the game. I think people who don't like it are either pessimists, or worried they won't get the loot.
