Kind of worrying so many picked 2; first one will always be the best due to originality.

The first in the series isn't best because it's the first, ever. It maybe the best, but that's the worst reason possible.

I said it was the best due to originality, not because it was first. The others simply build on it's predecessor, but it hasn't evolved into anything different.

So it's the best because 2 didn't change from what 1 is? Still doesn't make any sense. I can see how people prefer the first, but you aren't really putting forth any good reason to be honest. Being original doesn't mean it's good, and you're just saying "it was first" in a different way by saying that.

Being first and being original aren't always mutually exclusive. I think what borderlands 2 was missing was a good plot, which they nailed with the first. Seeing as it's an rpg, the story is of great importance.

Just because someone did something original doest mean it's the best overall. For example: edgard varese is known for being the father of electronic music. His music was very original but that doesn't mean he is automatically better than some of the newer artists like skrillex, crywolf, and aphex twin.

I don't think music is the best example, that category is highly opinionated and subjective. Borderlands 2 is definitely better than the original if you haven't played it yet. But going from bl1 to bl2 is more of a continuation of what you've already done in bl1, there's nothing game changing, it's just more of the same. So, in this case, bl1 wins.
