"Are you tired of your ship being nothing more that just a glorified loading screen!?!" "Then you gotta get PvE SPACE COMBAT for Destiny!!!" * * * Okay, here's the deal. I want to be able to use my ship for more than just prettying up my loading screens. Some of the ships, like LRv1 Javelin (an Uncommon ship often sold by Amanda Holliday) have guns or missile pods mounted on them, and it really ticks me off that you can't use them. Since Bungie gave us Sparrow Racing League, I've been thinking that maybe they'd be open to adding more game modes outside of what you'd normally expect from a shooter. Since Sparrow Racing was a PvP mode, I've thought that they could have space combat as the PvE equivalent. But what would it be like? I think the best model for space combat in Destiny would be Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge on the original Xbox. One of Bungie's gameplay designers- I think his name is Sage Merrill, the guy with the crazy Viking beard- is the one who actually worked on Crimson Skies, and also helped create the awesome space mission in Halo: Reach. Thing about Crimson Skies, other than having the best arcade-style flying action I've ever played, was that it had open missions in the campaign mode that were almost exactly like the Patrol missions in Destiny; they even had Patrol beacons of sorts that you could interact with to take on new missions. All we would need are the tools to add weapons to the ships we've already unlocked, and some new play spaces to use them. Take the New Monarchy faction ship that I got on my Titan, Armor of Vows; I should be able to take the cannons and missile pods off the LRv1 Javelin and slap them on my Legendary ship, then take it out into the solar system to dogfight with Fallen pirates. Maybe fly around the crumbling skyscrapers of the European Dead Zone on Earth, or fly through the debris fields surrounding the Foundling's Gyre in The Reef. There's two maps Bungie could start us off with, if they were to take a route similar to SRL. So, we're talking the ability to add weapons to our ships, and at least two Level 40 Aerial Patrol missions set on Earth and in the Reef to fly them in. What do we do once we're there? Again, look to Crimson Skies and it's open missions; have us protect a Dead Orbit transport from Fallen Pirates, race your ship against the timer for the chance to earn Glimmer, Engrams, and Vanguard rep, lead an attack against a Fallen Ketch, intercept a pack of Fallen Skiffs, collect salvage for the Tower factions by shooting down enemy starfighters, troopships, and capital ships... you get the idea. Play Crimson Skies on the original Xbox, and you might get a clearer picture; besides which, it's an awesome game, and it seems like it had some degree of influence on Destiny... Destiny is a first person shooter, but it's also set in outer space, and it gives every player their own spaceship... but our ships are little more than glorified space taxis used to dress up our loading screens. I want them to be more. Sparrow Racing was fun because it was different; it added a fun new gameplay experience outside the norm, and gave the Sparrow more purpose than just a means to get from Point A to Point B on Patrol missions... not to mention some really awesome high-level loot. Now I want them to do for our ships what they did for Sparrows; give them purpose. Make them fun, make them part of the actual gameplay. Post your thoughts. * * * P.S. Before you say "I paid for a shooter, not a flight sim", keep in mind that this would be just like Sparrow Racing League; it would be purely optional, and no one would force you to play it. But I think it should be there for the players who want it, and it would provide an exciting new way to play the game. Get bored running around on foot with a gun all day? Tired of driving around in circles on your Sparrow? Jump in your ship and try something new.
