This is why I gave up all faith in 343's continuation of Halo long ago.

  • This is me being serious, and this is just a really crappy story from what it looks like. Killing off a protagonist from one of the games that had a backstory and could've had a good character arc and/or appeared in other media with the rest of the squad. So, Mickey went to join the rebels because his friend got killed by the rebels? Dutch now has a wife and abandoned his brothers in arms to settle down? Seeing how genuinely terrible 343i writers seem to be with books and comics this isn't much of a surprise, but it's still not good.

  • Backstory? What backstory did the rookie even have?

  • What character arc did Rookie even have? Hell what character did he even have? He was a blank, no name, no line, no backstory, no personality shell through which we got to experience ODST. He brought all of the characters together in ODST, and in his death, he brought all the characters together again at his funeral; he went out exactly as he should have. Mickey joined the URF because he was disillusioned with the violence against humanity the UNSC was committing; he expresses hatred of the UNSC early on when they are ordered to rescue Vergil the Engineer, but are allowed to let Sadie--a human--die. He joins the URF because they put the human race first. If he wants violence against humanity to end, he's joining the side that will put humans above alien lives. He has a wife and settled down; what you call abandoning, most normal people would just call retiring after a long stint in the military. Is that a bad thing now?

  • His initials were JD, he was on New Jerusalem when the planet was under attack by the Covenant, where he met Gage Yevgenny and learned the man's entire life story before he sacrificed himself to kill Covenant forces and rogue ODSTs. JD was clearly kind and respectful enough to listen to the dying man's story and honor his memory.
What we knew about Rookie's character, he was a "strong, silent type". He kept to himself a lot, and while clearly being a thinker and listener he also made sure that he made note of his thoughts through his actions. It is impossible to have the protagonist be purely the player in a story that is linear, where the player cannot choose decisions and outcomes. There will always be a semblance of character, and the Rookie had his.
Yeah, the same guys that were more than willing to kill his friend, a human. Some great thinking, although Mickey was always clearly the more emotional and friendly guy, it still seems absurd to me. I call it abandoning, yes. He left his brothers in arms that he knew for a long time, some longer than others, and just casually settled down into civilian life? Dutch? The tough-as-nails ODST that seemed to love combat? I don't see it.

  • "JD" as in "John Doe" as in "the name we give people who have no name." And okay. So people who retire from the military are abandoning their brothers and arms and should be looked down upon. Congrats you just single-handedly insulted every military veteran ever. You know, sometimes even the toughest people need a break.

  • Maybe you should read it instead of making judgement based off of bullet points and half-assed explanations like you always do. Oh, by the way, the Rookie only spoke about 5 lines of dialogue in the entire franchise, all of which were outside the one game he appeared in.

  • You know, you could expand on those explanations if you feel they're insufficient to clarify them for the people who don't have time or don't care to buy and read the books. Or you could just not do these at all if you feel they don't do any good and you don't want to put the effort into them to make them better. Geez. I comment on what I think based on what I'm given and it's bad I didn't buy the book and read it before responding. So, a character's worth is decided not by his actions, but by his voice? I disagree.

  • The Rookie could never have had a character simply because he was you, the player. Rookie was a stoic enigma drenched in the somber backdrop that was Halo ODST. Giving him a voice or character would have overidden the whole purpose of his existance and spoiled the atmosphere of the game. Imagine if Chell from Portal suddenly started talking back to GLaDOS. Having him die without a legacy is very fitting to not only his image, but also to the somber mood of the game he starred in. I'm sure if they gave the Rookie a character, you would be complaining about it just as hard as you are his lack of one.

  • That's like saying giving Master Chief a developed character was bad because he was supposed to be you too.

Master Chief has had a voice, backstory, and personality since CE. But that doesn't matter to you does it? Nothing I say will stop you from making a closed minded response. People like you are why I've recently been contemplating suicide.

  • It kinda does because I addressed that to a degree in my response. JD is silent, so the voice doesn't apply, he has a backstory and personality too. Not as much as Chief, because John had much more of a focus on him. Well, that's not true and seems unnecessary to say of me. Sorry to hear that, but what did I do other than presenting a different argument? If you want to talk about that, we can talk, or just drop this whole thing if you want.

  • First, I would like to apologize. My previous post was just me lashing out. As for why this happened, the issue was on my end. I have found myself becoming more and more sensitive about...well....everything. Especially games I like. It's come to a point where someone else's opinion can ruin a game for me. I had to stop watching game reviews because they would make me depressed (especially satire like Zero Punctuation.) I know full well that others should not influence why I enjoy something but thats almost impossible for me now. I can't even enjoy Halo anymore... I also got into Arby n the Chief a couple months ago and the ending did no favors. You know there's something wrong when two action figures speaking with text to speech programs have more meaningful interactions than you. Compound this with the fact that my grades are shit, I'm being barraged with College emails, I have a horrible work ethic, and the slowly dawning realization that all of my dreams are equivalent to dust stirred up by a freight train. So yeah, I've had thoughts. Only thoughts though mind you. I'm not nearly stupid or gullible enough to act on them.

  • Yikes, yeah it's never a good feeling when something you used to enjoy ends up becoming something you hate because of others opinions. Have you tried playing games with friends? That usually makes them more fun, in my experience. I understand having a poor work ethic for schoolwork, but I'm sure you'll find some way to keep moving forward. Even if not college, there' s always other jobs and trade schools out there. Glad to hear you're still holding it together then, things tend to get better as time goes on. And suicide really isn't a matter of someone being gullible or stupid, it's when someone is too mentally ill and desperate to see another way out.

  • Most of my friends aren't on anymore. And the two that are mostly play PS4 (A console I lack.) I just wanted to apologize again. Seeing so many people blindly hating on 343 gets to you after a while. I happen to like them but mindlessly bashing you for thinking otherwise is foolish. You actually have some logic behind your reasoning.

  • You have the time to talk to me and tell me I'm wrong, but not just make a short 2-3 sentence explanation giving your side? I'm not asking for Great Wall of China here, I just wanted a short answer since apparently I'm wrong about everything.
