A question for the "grown up gamers". Do you enjoy games more now, or when you were younger?

Now, I have freedom to play when, and how I want too.

screw that, make me 15 again

I'm married, I have no freedom lol

So, being destiny is the first game I've REALLY gotten into since I was about 15...besides games like madden and nba 2k. I sat there thinking about how different it is playing as an adult. I've been living on my own since I'm 24, and it's just a different experience now. No more sitting on my bed, playing when I was allowed. Now I get home from work, do my stuff and I play. There's something about sitting on my couch, with my feet up on the ottoman, with my 100 lb dog sitting next to me, playing it on the big screen with my surround sound as loud as I want it that makes it way more enjoyable. Granted I'm not married, nor have kids...so I know this won't last forever. If you're 18+ and still living at home, no disrespect at all...in fact I actual envy you, ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN LOL. I loved games as a kid, but I actually enjoy it now way more than I ever have. EDIT- KEEP IN MIND THIS IS PURELY ABOUT GAMING, NOT LIFE IN GENERAL. IF THAT WAS THE CASE, I'D TAKE 15 AGAIN LOL

  • I wish I could play as much as I did as a kid. I get home from work most days and I'm just too beat to get on.

    • It's an exchange. At 5, I loved gaming but I sucked at them. At 15, I was good at gaming and had all the time in the world for it, but it was a slow period in the gaming industry and I became concerned with criminal activity. At 40, I can buy whatever I want for gaming, I can play the game, but my interest is more in finding the flaws than "git gud" and I have to wait for the family to go to bed to be able to enjoy it. I can see all of the stages of gaming in my kids now. The baby in awe, the kinderguardian, the preteen wannabe hacker, and the barely legal, total -blam!-ing idiot that isn't concerned with PSN trophies anymore. The pixelated life; She is a beaut.

    • Not only did I find games more fun in the past(feel guilty about wasting time now). I think I also just enjoy the games I used to play more than the ones today(mass effect, halo123, dragon age origins, starcraft Broodwar, even point and click adventure games on dos) It's partly nostalgia and partly that I just think developers put more passion into their games. Nowadays they make games for people with the attention span of a goldfish(people who skip cutsscenes in halo), and only have profits in mind. Ex. Destiny having no story because they thought it would be too much for today's gamers. I'm guessing that Staten left bungie for that very reason.

When I was a kid, I couldn't understand how the game plays, or how to search. It was a journey of discovery, just like life, we were too stupid to know how the world rotates. Everything was like "wow" to us, I love the feel of discovery and exploration. Now, that you know a lot, and still very little, yet most of what happens often, it doesn't feel as exciting. Edit; I didn't read the final edit.

      • I'm 26 and enjoy newer games, but miss the older games. I use to skip school when a new Halo game came out and would have a LAN party. 16 people running CTF on Blood Gulch was a blast. Been to an MLG tournament in Dallas. Grew up playing games on super Nintendo and 64 with my brother. It's a lot harder now to get good gaming time in with a family and full time job, but I do what I can.

      • I miss the games from my childhood but I prefer my mode of play as an adult- on my couch with my dog and a beer. My only regret is that I'm too damn old to pull all-nighters like I used too. It makes me crabby as fvck. My husband argues that I'm that way anyway so..

        • I enjoyed games more with friends IRL when I was younger, had a lot of fun on my N64. Now most of my friends are married with kids, and none of them play video games anymore.

        • I don't get into games as deeply as I did in my teens. I remember playing through complex on goldeneye for hours trying to beat it in under 2:05 to get the invisibility cheat.( don't quote me on the time required, it was a long time ago) I would unlock absolutely everything on a game before moving on.

          • Hell yeah, anyone who thinks games were better in the 80's and early 90's is wearing rose tinted glasses. games back then may well have been fun but compared to todays games they are like Banksy compared to Dali. I still own a Snes but if i want to play any of those old games i just use an emulator on my laptop

          • ive been gaming along time, from the 1980s (showing my age), its amazing to see the progress and power we now have. i never get bored i tend to go along with things, and cherry pick what i enjoy. this game is very clever and allows you to be expressive. as you get older you do fall into liking certain games and styles. i dont mind playing alongside young or older than me, i am good at learnign very quickly. yup anyone at home i envy you haha id have more time on here.

          • I think I enjoyed a variety of games more when I was as kid, used to get a couple of games a week for my spectrum 48k hell they were only £1:99. Now I tend to get one game and play it to death. I think developers used to pushed the boundaries more back then too. With the limited specs and no upgrades (curse PC developers forcing a hardware upgrade for every new installment of their games)

Great thread. Great responses. 38 and have been gaming for 30 years. Can't say I enjoyed it more or less when I was young. It's so different. I can say that online gaming has changed me. Can't remember the last single payer game I bought. I remember online mp on 56k. (Duke, Quake, etc.) Been a fan of online fragging ever since.

              • Haha 34 here and I am actually getting ready to bid on a Nintendo 64 today on eBay that comes with MarioKart. I have a 16 month old son and eventually want him to try the games I played when I was younger. I remember going to Acme Clicks back in 1988 to buy my very first Nintendo. I was 8 years old and saved my allowance for a year to buy it! I sometimes miss the days where you just played a game for fun and no one cared about stats, kd, and win loss. Those were the days!

              • I don't think I enjoy games more or less than when I was young. I have 2 small children (2 & 4) and they quote lines from the games I play sometimes (we've woken the hive!) because they love watching mommy play and 'help' with their own controllers. My 4 year old has played a bit but doesn't get it quite yet, but I cannot wait until she and I can play together. All of this adds to the fun for me, as well as the social element of playing with others that I didn't have as a young gamer. And as a pp said, I wish I could still pull all-nighters like I used to, but after keeping up with the kids all day and dealing with tantrums and kid fights, I pass the eff out by midnight. :P

First game I ever played was Horace Goes Skiing on the Spectrum. To my tiny mind at the time I was witnessing magic. Still feel that way. Always will feel that way

                • I enjoy new IP's more. When I was younger (I'm 30 now), certain games like Smash Bros, Mario Party, Goldeneye, and Mortal Kombat were fresh and exciting; now, they are either sequels, or other games are similar to them making the experience feel fun, but dated.

                • Play time wise, not much has changed. But game play wise, I enjoy games much more now than when I was younger. I remember playing shooters (and a few other games) and being completely frustrated that I couldnt get past certain levels or missions or get certain achievments because, well, I sucked haha. Now I can do just about anything.

                • i think i enjoy them more now. or i should say I get into them a lot more. when i was a kid, i would play tons of different games . never really sticking with one. i had all the time in the world to play games. now, i'm a lot more selective of what i play. i only have so much time to play - because of family, work, and other stuff. so i usually pick one game and go "all in". right now it's destiny. it's a lot of fun too, to get my kids involved. all 3 of us in a party playing CoD Zombies was a great time. sadly, neither of them have any interest in Destiny.

                • There are some old games I wouldn't trade for anything, but it's mostly nostalgia. Other than the trend towards micro-transactions in the industry in general, video games are a lot more fun now.
