Need piano advice

I have been learning piano for a few months now, most of my time practicing has been trying to learn songs by reading sheet music and practicing scales. Are there any other techniques I should look into that would help with playing?

Look into every chord, do arpeggios not just scales. Create a list of songs you wish to learn that mean a lot to you and go for them, when you practice techniques, start to relax more. Try doing trills as well especially, and relax as you do them. Don’t stiffen up you’ll slow down and lose dexterity and hurt yourself man. Furthermore, constantly listen to the music you aim to learn, it will benefit you immensely in the long run when you can hear it in your head from memory. Keep playing, freestyle play when you feel you’re ready to. Do it for the love of it, and back off from the piano if you’re going through a dark time you need to NOT put dark emotions of pain, sadness, and suffering into that instrument or else the memories will make you shudder when you consider playing it again after having played it in more dark times than happy, at least in my experience that’s how it worked for me.

  • Do you have a teacher? Can you read ALL the notes? Use both hands for scale and arpeggio? Practice the basics first, build a really reliable foundation then start learning pieces. Another good thing to remember is to play classical, pop is fun in all but classical teaches you technique and much more.

  • You should be sitting up straight, but without stiffness and should feel comfortable don't ever let yourself become tense. using proper rhythm wiggle your fingers and jam the keys a quick snap of the finger and with practice, that's all there is to it.
I have no idea what actual materials are out there to help you learn, but like most things it’s just time. Speed and skill come with practice. Just keep playing!
• I dabbled with learning piano but didn't get too far when I got told no when I tried to sign up for it in school... Teacher decided it was easier to have someone who knew how to play already rather than try to teach someone.... But I kept trying to learn on my own regardless I wanted to play the music I enjoyed listening to... So I force taught myself by ear to play some video game tunes... Few lines of Bach here a couple of lines of Piet Chan there motivations important find something you like learn how to play it then play around with it and then just keep rolling from there It's what I did... hands are too messed up to play now... Some kind of tendon thing don't have a whole lot of fluid motion in half of my fingers.... Point is it's motivation... And that can be a double edged sword limitations breed learning and technique but too much and you can suffocate enjoy your work and then it won't be work anymore but don't get complacent or you'll never grow.... Things I wish I knew a long time ago

  • It is intensely important that you wear your hair at a length that starts looking distinguished but gradually unravels into emotionally unbalanced mayhem as you move further through concertos. It should be long enough to flip dramatically as you swing your shoulders wildly during tense moments. It MUST drape your eyes to the point of nearly obscuring your vision, soaking with sweat dripping down onto the keys, as you hunch under the intense melancholic weight of music you play. None of these will technically improve your skill. But it will fool the audience into believing you are one of the masters. And at the end of the day, that’s what performance really is. Also you need a cummerbund. This last point is non-negotiable.

In addition to scales there’s also exercises that help practice technique. Czerny has a lot of good material geared specifically towards developing your technique. Some scores even have little exercises along with the sheet music that help you with specific passages. But like the other guy said, having a teacher helps a lot with things that you might not be conscious of. Your posture, how hold your arms and move your hands are important not only for playing better but for avoiding developing injuries over time. tl;dr Czerny Studies in Technics & method books, practice in front of a mirror, watch how other pianists play (maybe not Gould though) And practice slowly.

  • I don’t know if you have one but It’s the kind of thing you need a teacher for… developing a solid technique early will help you in the long run…
