Based off what we've seen, I think the story going to play off the last word/thorn, man with the golden gun, dredgen, gambit lore. You know, how shin aka the man with the golden gun aka renegade hunter is also a dredgen (both sides of the force). That tests guardians to see if they go too far to the darkness (sith) side, and handles them if they do. I compare shin to mace cause the lightsaber fighting style windu uses can turn you to the dark side if you lack the willpower to resist. Same as using the light for good or darkness.
